The Grey Knights have always interested me as an army. There is something heroic about small forces of elite Marines taking on hordes of daemons to save mankind. This book was more than I expected and I found myself unable to put it down. Ben Counter definitely did a fantastic job capturing the fanaticism of these elite Marines, and I thought he described the evilness of the daemon forces perfectly also.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book, and could see myself buying other books if this was expanded into a series. I thought the characters were well developed and easy to identify with, and the story was also so unpredictable it kept me guessing until the very end. Both of these things is what I tend to identify as a good book. If either one of these aspects lack in my opinion the book as a whole suffers. The characters, while superhuman like Space Marines are supposed to be, still had a level of humanity that I identified with.

The story itself while simple in nature kept you guessing with interesting plot twists and turns. Every time I thought I knew was about to happen Ben would prove me wrong and it did a very good job of keeping me interested in the story. The ending in itself was something that I hadn’t even thought was a possibility. The story kept getting more and more hopeless that I had no idea how they were going to pull it off, and had already thought to myself that if Ben blows this ending I’m going to be mad at this book. Luckily for me he knew exactly what he was doing and wrapped it up very well.

If you are a fan of the Grey Knights or just the Warhammer universe I would suggest you pick this book up. It is well worth the money spent, and found its way on the keeper shelf of my bookcase at home.
