Birmingham Science Fiction Group presents
“Penguins and Other Early Paperbacksâ€
This is to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Penguin Books in July 2010. Chris’ talk will be covering paperbacks before Penguin, early Penguins and the competitors of Penguin, dealing mostly with UK paperbacks and mostly with SF.
Our speaker in April is a Birmingham Science Fiction Group member and regular attendee at BSFG meetings since 1972. Chris Morgan was Birmingham Poet Laureate for 2008-9. He teaches Creative Writing to adults in various parts of Birmingham, gives frequent lectures and readings, and is the author/editor of 11 books.
We are meeting for this event on 9th April at 8pm (entry from 7.30pm) at the Briar Rose Hotel on Bennett’s Hill in Birmingham. This venue is just 5 minutes walk from New Street Station and handy for all bus routes. Price is £3 for members, £4 for non-members.
The BSFG still has a few tickets left for Jasper Fforde’s visit on 14th May, £4 for members and £5 for non-members; we accept payment by cheque, PO or Paypal; please email firstname.lastname@example.org, or ring 07845 897760 for details of the latter and to book your place. Please book by 31st March to avoid disappointment, as we cannot guarantee any sales after this date.
The group itself has many members of all ages, and between them the membership has an enormous wealth of knowledge of literary SF, as well as films, television, etc. If you want to know about a particular author or book, the BSFG is unlikely not to be able to help you! Just let us know you are a first timer when you turn up and any member will be happy to introduce to the committee and make you feel as welcome as we can…
If you live anywhere in or around the West Midlands, the BSFG is the group for you! For further information, and a copy of our monthly newsletter, please:
