Half-Life in live action

Half-Life 2 has been a huge influence on fantasy film-making in recent years: everything from Children of Men to Cloverfield has borrowed liberally from Valve’s masterpiece.

But who could have foreseen that it would inspire a revolution in film-making? After watching a fan-film based on the game Warren Ellis said of its reputed $500 budget: “If that turns out to be even close to true, then something big just shifted.” Take a look at the Purchase Brothers’ superb short film over on YouTube. Is Ellis right: did the game just change?

If you’re wondering just how much work goes into a project like this, look out for Dark Horizons 54, going out to members in March: we’ll be running the production diary of a team working on a Lord of the Rings fan-film.
