Sorry, I didn't realise I had to read into that link to find out the sad news. But having now done that, it is indeed unwelcome news. I have had much contact with TMW over the years on Shocklines, and only yesterday I coincidentally cited one of  his stories in a discussion on TLO, a story to be included in an anthology I would publish of my favourite stories.

The library was home. The library was a world away from the school it sat in the middle of. It wasn’t big and it wasn’t old in a classical Victorian way. It was a pre-fabricated space with off-white walls and grey carpet. But it was quiet in there; seemingly at peace unlike the rest of the school – to my mind, anyway. It was where I spent my lunchbreaks while other pupils went outside, come rain or shine, to play football, fight or do other things I wasn’t interested in.  - G. R. YEATES

I recently read Dweller by Jeff Strand, and it was the first of his novels that I have read.  I thought it had just the right blend of humor, horror, poignancy, and sentimentality.  It was a very good read.  On the downside, I had high expectations before I started reading Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn.  I had a hard time getting through the novel and did not come close to meeting expectations. - CARL ALVES

NEW INTERVIEW WITH JAMES COOPER

The major publishing houses still aren’t able to appreciate how marketable horror fiction could be; their idea of horror seems to be the paranormal romances that line the shelves and the endlessly commissioned vampire and zombie novels. Isn’t anyone else as tired of this shit as I am? The good stuff is where it’s always been: in the small press, where independent publishers like PS Publishing, ChiZine and Gray Friar Press continue to wage the war against mediocrity and horror cliché. This is where you’re most likely to discover Nina Allan, Conrad Williams and Joel Lane (up until his awful, untimely passing). In the small press, horror fiction is as vibrant as it ever has been…  JAMES COOPER

I think everything can reach an oversaturation point. I think when there are too many people trying to repeat something that works (and makes some money) that the quality goes to hell. I think that is happening now with a lot of the horror subgenres. One vampire film makes it, and suddenly we have to have twenty. People get sick of them, and the moviemakers move onto the next big thing. - SHAWN EWERT

THE BOOK THAT MADE ME STUART KEANE ON RICHARD LAYMON'S FLESH

Now, in hindsight, there are themes of body snatching, possession and psychotic tendencies being brought to the surface. To analyse is to ruin the experience really. I think Laymon just wanted to write a bloody good horror story and has done so with gusto.  - STUART KEANE

BRAND NEW INTERVIEW PLEASE SHARE AROUND

When I was younger I was all about flowery prose and lots of adjectives, but as I’ve aged and written more I’ve learned that while words tell our stories, often they can also get in the way. I try to strip away everything that isn’t entirely about the story and the characters, get rid of all the fluff, and make the words flow as smoothly as possible. Every word gets judged as to its necessity. I guess you could call that a bare bones style -  JUSTIN MACUMBER

A BRILLIANT IN DEPTH INTERVIEW WITH CAROLE JOHNSTONE

Horror endures, I think, because love or hate it, it exists; it won’t go away.  That famous Lovecraft quote: “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown,” is always going to be true, always relevant. People want escapism, however dark, and while the new wave of chick noir and toxic marriage thrillers may not be your cup of tea, there’s no denying that they’re an improvement on sparkly vampires and hunky werewolves. They also help bridge the sizable gap between the horror genre and its potentially larger audience.

And when I see writers like Adam Nevill, Joe Hill, Laird Barron, Sarah Pinborough, Alison Littlewood, Tim Lebbon, and Sarah Langan, among many others, writing unapologetic horror fiction outside of the indie presses and for audiences that might not even know their Mary Shelley from their Shirley Jackson never mind the rest, it makes me feel hopeful. -  CAROLE JOHNSTONE

This is a very difficult question. Melmoth, from Maturin’s Melmoth the Wanderer would have to be a nightmarish neighbour. He sold his soul to the devil for a lengthy extension to his life; however, in the meantime, if he can persuade someone else to take his place in the pact, he is let off and keeps his own soul intact. I imagine he’d be forever extolling the benefits of a much longer existence over the garden fence of a weekend. How tiresome! The autodidact from Sartre’s Nausea would be the ideal neighbour; he’s so quiet, lives alone and is usually in the local library. No noise problems there. - See more at: http://ow.ly/wrSM6  (http://ow.ly/wrSM6)

A FABULOUS  BRAND NEW INTERVIEW

If you could kill off any character from any other book who would you choose and how would they die?

The Vampire Lestat. I used to be an avid Anne Rice fan, but started to become disenchanted while reading The Tale of the Body Thief. Looking back, Interview with a Vampire was basically Punch and Judy complete with baby. About midway through Memnoch the Devil, I started to get seriously bored and irritated. If you haven’t read Memnoch, in it Lestat drinks menstrual blood and sits around talking in person with God and the Devil... This was five years before I was inspired to start writing fiction, so I wasn’t critical as a peer, I was just a disappointed fan to see the series start creeping into Catholic dogma instead of horror. Also, I was beginning to grasp the difference between dark fantasy and horror. I definitely lean towards horror, whereas Anne Rice went on to write a fantasy series about Jesus, which is definitely not my cuppa.

As for how I’d like to see Lestat die, he’s such a narcissist, I’d laugh to see him break his own spine so he can suck himself to death. Of course, like Punch, he’ll never die. For what it’s worth, I have similar complaints as a fan about Ridley Scott’s Alien film series. I wish he hadn’t jumped the shark and landed in religion. - See more at: http://ow.ly/wPl3L (http://ow.ly/wPl3L)

Quite why anyone would want to turn into a insect that doesn't have either a cool stinger or a  nasty bite, and spends most of its life buried in the ground as a larva is beyond me.  And when you throw in the fact that squirrels are one of the cicadas top predation species makes it look as though this beast inside is the poor mans cursed creature.

If you could kill off any character from any other book, who would you chose and how would they die?

Die, die, die Ramsay Snow, for everything you've done to Theon Greyjoy in the Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin. Ramsay is one massively sick and twisted freak of nature. Guys like Ramsay should die slow, painful, misery-filled deaths. I'm about halfway through reading The Orenda by Joseph Boyden right now, and the way the Haudenosaunee torture the Wendat would be a pretty fitting way for Ramsay to go down. - See more at: http://ow.ly/wRW0P  (http://ow.ly/wRW0P)

If you could erase one horror cliché what would be your choice?

The whole god-damn scenario that we see in every modern American ghost movie, and it goes like this:

“Family falls on hard times yet somehow afford a big house in the arse-end of nowhere. Kid starts seeing/doing/hearing stuff but no-one takes much notice. Then stuff gets stronger and parents believe it. Experts come in, a couple of them die but not the family themselves. Family moves or kid gets fixed or something, but ending is a bit ambiguous so they can make a sequel.”

It’s shit. All of it, just….shit. - See more at:  http://ow.ly/x5n3B (http://ow.ly/x5n3B)

Here it is the largest interview I have ever done.

Please read it and please , please share it and leave a comment on the interview.

Curtain Call has subsequently appeared in a few of your collections, looking back at this story how do you think it holds up when compared to your most recent stories?

Mick – it’s shit compared to a lot of our others. It’s a fairly formulaic ghost story, written before we had a true idea of what a good ghost story should be all about. When it was written we were only just discovering the ghost story collections that now form the nucleus of our shared library of genre books. We hadn’t read much Wakefield, Cowles, Munby, Caldecott, Rolt, Malden, let alone James.

Len – It was still a whole lot better than anything we had written up to that point. I cringe now at some of the stories we produced back in those days and thank the literary gods they were never published. Thankfully the editors we submitted to then had better taste than us.

I was hooked by the first lines and dragged through the sexual maelstrom that followed.  Ballard constructed a damaged mosaic in tune with the damaged logic inherent to the deviant passions of first Vaughan, then Ballard himself, inserting himself into the role as narrator, lending impact, a head-on impact—the only conceivable path Ballard could have chosen for Vaughan’s tale.

Which fictional character would be you perfect neighbour, and who would be your nightmare neighbour?

Perfect neighbour: Richard Sharpe from the Bernard Cornwell novels. The guy is just so damn practical! I'm sure he would have the perfect tool for everything so I would be round there every five minutes borrowing things or asking him if could help build an out house or something. Plus, come the zombie apocalypse, he would be one mean shot with a rifle.

Nightmare neighbour: Dr Temperance Brennan from the Kathy Reichs novels. This is a woman who has a great job as a forensic anthropologist and she should be happy with her lot in life. However, she just has to stick her nose into every case that wanders past her and ends up not only getting herself in trouble but also getting those around her killed. The cost of house insurance for living next to her would be phenomenal! - See more at: http://ow.ly/xULnk  (http://ow.ly/xULnk)

It’s June, 1989. I am eleven years old.

It’s towards the ass end of the school term, probably the last week of school before the break, and it’s a glorious summer day in Devon, and no-one, least of all the teachers, gives a shit anymore. The borderline sociopath headteacher that also runs the 10 and 11 year old class with an iron fist has spent most of the last few days holed up in the staff room watching the cricket – if Louise Thompson is to be believed, he stands while watching, a cricket bat in hand, as if he’s invented the Wii sports cricket sim 17 years early, or more likely as though he’s drunk. When I come to leave the school in a couple of weeks, I’ll unaccountably shake his hand, tears not quite held back, in as pure a display of Stockholm Syndrome as you’ll ever see, but right now I’m supremely comfortable and secure in my undying hatred and contempt for him and all he stands for. -

Of all of the films that you have worked on, You’re Next  is my favourite.  When you signed up to the film did you have any idea this would be a film that would spilt genre audience right down the middle?

We had no idea. We just went out and tried to make the best film we could make. I am particularly proud of the look of the film, being unusually beautiful for a genre film. And of course I love that the masks and that the blood logo I made ended up being the logo for the film. That fans are tattooing the masks and the logo on themselves still blows me away. How cool is that! - See more at: http://ow.ly/xZ11M  (http://ow.ly/xZ11M)

I mean, you wouldn’t pace a movie that slow any more. You just would not. You wouldn’t, for example, fly out to the other base twice – no way. You’d contrive a reading of the map while you were there the first time, get the exposition solved in one hit. I also don’t think you’d use fade outs that apparently mean that days have passed uneventfully. It’s a little dismaying how much pacing has tightened in cinema in the last – fucking hell, the last 30 years. Fuck, I’m old. -

I didn’t love Evil Dead 2 because my dad would’ve hated it. I mean, that didn’t hurt, but I loved it because it made horror – a genre I had formerly been taught was AWFUL and for BAD PEOPLE – and made it hilarious, relatable, and so violent that the brutality became surreal camp

yes the Leftovers, could be described as zombies, but they exist more as a metaphor for the emotional state of our world than a flesh eating horde. They are not flesh eating monsters, they exists only to destroy us all.  Blank templates of those who they once were , filled only with pain and rage.   -

I (ALMOST SURVIVED THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE

I got though the Zombie apocalypse and almost survived it. Well, a version of it anyway. I wasn't there for the big battles or the panic of a global pandemic spreading from country to country. Nor was I there for the collapse of global systems of economics and power and water supply. Somehow I slept through all of this, and walked straight into the aftermath. Small groups of survivors scrabbling for what supplies they can in a world where humans had been bumped down a notch on the food chain.

So what the chuff am I talking about?

I wrote this blog post close to Halloween, a good time for something scary. Although I like the cute horror of Halloween and a good, over-the-top zombie film, lately I’ve been chasing after some true-life horror as I research the lives of murder victims for my Jack the Ripper Victims Series of novels. As one who has always been intrigued by the dark and disturbing, as a practitioner in the horror genre, ..... read more at http://www.gingernutsofhorror.com/9/post/2015/01/rippers-of-london-by-alan-m-clark.html (http://www.gingernutsofhorror.com/9/post/2015/01/rippers-of-london-by-alan-m-clark.html)

Welcome to Film Gutter for our latest trawl through the most unpleasant aspects of cinema. Once again we'll be taking a deep breath and holding our noses as we explore the most foetid waters of film as we know it. Today's choice is Subconscious Cruelty, another regular feature in many people's 'most disturbing films of all time' lists. And with good reason. In fact, if I were to make a list of the most confusing films of all time, this would be a definite contender for the number one spot there too. - See more at: http://www.gingernutsofhorror.com/19/post/2015/02/film-gutter-subconscious-cruelty-2000.html (http://www.gingernutsofhorror.com/19/post/2015/02/film-gutter-subconscious-cruelty-2000.html)

My feeling about fiction, regardless of the genre, is that it is meant to be a representation of life. I want my books to give a whole spectrum of experiences to my readers. Not just fear or terror or revulsion, but excitement, laughter, pain, sorrow, desire, etc.
