Title: What games have you been playing?
Post by: Rolnikov on April 09, 2011, 11:30:46 am
The threads on books and films have done very well - do we have many gamers on the forums? And what games have you been playing lately?

I've just finished Crysis 2 on Xbox 360. Wasn't all that impressed. Being able to sneak around invisibly was fun, but I found the game a bit of a chore. And it seemed a bit unfinished: it was quite buggy, and there were a few sequences that ended with you getting behind the turret on a vehicle but didn't give you the chance to use it.

Well, you're on my Xbox Live friends list but we haven't played anything together yet, so you may have spotted what I'm up to just now!

Finished Dragon Age 2, which despite repetitive environments had a surprisingly mature and deep 'low-fantasy' story. If you can forgive its graphical shortcomings then it's definitely worth a look. Apart from that, I'm zapping through a second playthrough of Mass Effect 2 in anticipation for the sequel, and awaiting Portal 2 at the end of this month.

Oh, I've also got Halo: Reach sitting there, which I'll get around to at some point. But I tend to play Halo co-op with the missus, so it needs both of us to be in the mood (ahem).

Rolnikov, I was left cold by the first Crysis on PC, so I wasn't tempted to buy the sequel. Hell, haven't I melted enough graphics cards?  :)
Interesting that they've included all the console platforms this time (as EA will be doing with the sequel to American McGee's Alice) but very revealing that the console version hasn't been that satisfying.

I'm nostalgic for the first FarCry now...

I've never had a PC powerful enough for gaming, so I tend to stick to consoles. My last PC only just managed to run Civ 3... My new one can just about handle Peggle!

I enjoyed Halo: Reach - a nice greatest hits package, although it's weird that Master Chief was the first Spartan to realise how useful it would be to hold two guns at once... Like a lot of action games, I rented it from Lovefilm, played it through, had a go at the easier achievements and sent it back. I finish a lot more games since I started renting them, which isn't what you might expect.

My gamertag is Rolnikov, if anyone else is on Xbox Live. I hardly ever play online (when the Xbox is on it's usually because Ranjna is watching films on the Sky Player), but I do love having friends' scores to aim for in leaderboards.

I'm on Dragon Age 2 at the moment, really enjoying it actually - it's a lot less fiddly than the first one. I never quite finished number one, in fact, because I got to the last fight and realised I had failed to pack sufficient health potions, and going back to a point in the game where I could acquire some more just seemed like too big of a chore. Confident that I will finish this one though; I like the fact that the moral decisions are not always straight forward. I appreciate a good storyline in a game, and am often disappointed (like with Castlevania, Lords of Shadow, which I also played recently. Quite fun, but the revelation of who the big bad guy is has to be one of the most ridiculous moments I have encountered in a game.) but here I have not been so far.

I haven't finished Dragon Age: Origins yet either - my first run at it was interrupted by Mass Effect 2 coming out.

In return for Crysis 2, Lovefilm have sent me Odyssey: Journey to the West, an sf version of the Monkey story.

My goodness I hate it. I don't think it's let me play for 60 continuous seconds yet, constantly wresting away control of my character to show me its landscapes, or robots, or dialogue, or cutscenes. Plus, your character is marvellously acrobatic - but only if you're trying to jump in the correct locations and in the right direction.

I like to play games, not watch them...

I liked a few things about Odyssey: Journey to the West; but, yes, it was a case of "Press up on the left stick to win."

I've long decided not to bother spending a grand or more on a PC to play games, when I could save 200 on a PS3 and a decent-ish PC to run Word and Photoshop.  ;D

Ploughing my way through Red Dead Redemption and Gran Tourismo 5 Prologue; next, LA Noire when it comes out.

I wonder if they'll be interested in a gaming panel at FCon?

That would be good - I think we missed a trick the year before last when the head of Rebellion was there! It was funny later that year to see him talking on an Xbox Live video about AvP and be able to say that I'd shared a panel with him.

I've been playing Clash of Heroes: Might and Magic (Xbox version) a lot lately. A nifty puzzle RPG, that thankfully lets you skip all the dialogue. Actually a bit stuck on it at the moment, which is something I haven't said about a game in a while.

Still got my Atari Jaguar and the original AvP game he/they did for it; bloody scary it was (not any more, though).

I'm back on Fable 3 after leaving it to gather dust since before Xmas. It's not as good as Fable 2 but I think most folk know that! :D I think Molyneux fixed something that wasn't broken just to scratch an itch 8)
Got back into Fable after playing D&D:Daggerdale which I got a copy of for reviewing. I didn't think that was as bad as most folk made out but I'm not sure it's worth splashing out 1200 M$ points for...

I picked up LA Noire on release day and after hammering it for 3 days I've shelved it for a while so I don't just finish it and then feel guilty :D Good game just not as good as the hype.

I actually don't play games much these days... honest!

For a while I was playing Marvel Super Hero Squad: The Infinity Gauntlet, which was little more than okay, but the children wouldn't let me return it to Lovefilm till we'd played it to death...

Now it's Star Wars: Force Unleashed II, which I'm not mad about either, though the force powers are fun.

Jason Kingsley? :o

Yes, I think that was him. It was just after they'd bought Solaris. He was on the panel I moderated about ebooks, and talked a bit about the possibilities of interactive books.

dragon age 2 which I've completed - fun to run into various versions of the original sidekicks in different lifestyles (dependent on your outcomes of origins)

- upside - tactics and skill trees, grossly underdone in origins

- downside - a plethora of scene hopping (and cursed loading) in order to complete simple quests; male protagonist voicing is more wooden than an Aunt Sally; not enough variation in maps and layouts; limited choice of protagonists; the dodgiest accents I've ever heard; dull dull plot; the annoying elfess with the broken mirror

overall lacking the charm and polish of origins but more challenging in some of the gameplay

I made the mistake of getting a PS3 last month. Dead Space 2 is on order, and knowing how much the first one (on the PC) sucked me in I can see that I'm not going to be getting much sunlight in the next few months...

I've heard some people say that the sequel is more combat-oriented, with less emphasis on the puzzles and exploration. Anyone find that?

I passed 30,000 Xbox gamerpoints today with a spell on Borderlands (which I'm enjoying a lot). It's only quite so high because of all the games I've rented and played for a weekend or two, but it was nice thinking back over all the adventuring involved.  :)

Joe Abercrombie is in Edge #230, talking about some of his favourite games - Lords of Midnight, Elite, Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption. He tends to squeeze in an hour and a half of gaming at the end of the day, but once spent six days straight on GTA: San Andreas. He says it's had a positive effect on the "strategic thinking" in his novels, saying that "You learn how important the high ground is if you play Total War a lot."

His single British Fantasy Award nomination gets a mention. It's bizarre how badly neglected UK fantasy writers are by our awards. That I have as many BFA nominations as Joe Abercrombie is profoundly daft...

Also some promising info in there about the new X-Com. Although it's a shooter, it's going to include the research elements of the original game.

I used to be quite a serious gamer but have fallen seriously behind the times in the last ten years. Now I'm the proud(ish) owner of a Nintendo Wii that's steadily gathering dust, although I do get it out of mothballs to play Mario Kart whenever I get the chance.

I'm greatly intrigued by the new generation of MMOs though. We've just started a video game thread over at the Impossible Podcasts blog and I'm currently editing a review of Dragon Age 3, which sounds really rather good. The Dragon Age series, along with Mass Effect and Portal, keep coming up in conversation online and I can't help feeling I'm missing out. It's just a lack of time and money holding me back!

I've been playing Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon. I was a big fan of the previous game, and was thoroughly enjoying this one, right up until the point where it suddenly ended. It's the most blatantly unfinished game I've played since Defcon 5, pretty much just a shell for downloadable content which may never arrive.

I've been playing the new XBLA War of the Worlds, narrated by Patrick Stewart, written by Christopher Fowler, and setting the story in 1950s (I think) London. To be honest it was a game I bought less to play than because I thought it would be interesting to review, but it's diverting so far, if a bit slow. At times the children were in hysterics at my lacklustre attempts to escape the death rays.

I'm afraid to buy Skyrim, to be honest. With Morrowind and Oblivion I was regularly playing till 2am and 3am and it was driving Ranjna nuts. With the latter I had to turn on the parental controls and limit myself to 12 hours a week. When my time was up each week I was as jittery as a junkie... So I've put it on my wishlist; if someone else buys me it for Christmas, I'm not responsible for the consequences.

It's really quite fortunate that I don't like online gaming, because I'd have been one of those guys who plays WoW non-stop until they drop dead at their desks.

Had Bulletstorm from Lovefilm for a couple of weeks, and that was good fun, with its laser leash, sliding, kicking, and skill shots. Playing other games, I'm already missing the kick button.

The dialogue was pretty funny, but one line offended the heck out of me. Hearing that the people who didn't fight well enough on a dangerous planet were left without bullets, the protagonist says, "Darwin would have been proud." Erm, no.

Also had Rage, but sent it back after half an hour. Barely distinguishable from Borderlands, and I only just got done with that.

I was lucky enough to get in on the beta test for Star Wars: The Old Republic and am now playing the early access live game.

I love it. It's  more engaging than World of Warcraft. And I get to be a Jedi Knight. With a lightsaber.

Tick that off the 'childhood fantasies to realise' list...

Must get back to Dragon Age Origins sometime!

Currently playing Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, which is basically a simplified version of Shadow Complex, and Batman: Arkham City, which is pretty good. Haven't quite got the hang of the combat and combo system yet.

Does anyone else play 'Mount and Blade: Warband'? It never fails fails to get me in the mood for writing a bit of heroic fantasy. Then again, I rarely actually do write it because I'll spend the time playing M&B instead...

Haven't heard of Mount and Blade: Warband till now, but it looks good.

Very grateful to Lego Harry Potter for keeping the children quiet and happy this half-term. Lovely to hear them co-operating so peacefully.

The big gaming news for me this month was that Firaxis have quietly been working on a remake of X-Com: Enemy Unknown (this is a separate project from the FPS being made by a different studio). Looks very much like my idea of the perfect game!

That is very good news indeed! I loved X-Com. I never managed to complete it because I would get too attached to my squad and when the missions increased in difficulty I would have to keep restarting every time one of my favourites died. That signifies two things: I am an anal retentive geek and X-Com was a terrifically immersive game.
Title: Re: What games have you been playing?
Post by: Rolnikov on February 16, 2012, 09:30:22 pm
Definitely was... I only played it on the easiest levels, but still had my share of restarts - usually because of a glitch in the PlayStation version that made your characters do a weird little Bailey's walk every now and again (I had to buy a PSmouse in the end).

It was the way it all fit together that made it so perfect - the way the battles provided fodder for research which then had such a huge effect on the battles. In the final assault upon Cydonia my squad had such awesome psychic powers that we had most of the aliens under our mental control by the end of the first turn...

Yes, it was a beautifully balanced game. And I've had few more atmospheric gaming moments than stalking greys through a deserted farmyard.

This thread has given me a yen for X-Com which can't be satisfied on my netbook. I've just discovered, however, that its forerunner 'Laser Squad' can be played in browser here:

I went back to the Christopher Fowler/Patrick Stewart War of the Worlds - I had made some notes but wanted to finish the game before writing a review. But after an hour of playing it I hadn't made any progress at all... A very attractive game, with wonderful narration and animation, but old school difficulty levels.

I think that's fair enough; It's never going to be everyone's cup of tea. I find I can become so immersed in the actual environment that I rarely make much actual progress in terms of quests. The vast scope of it is a remarkable achievement, though it can often be quite daunting.

I played all the way through Elder Scrolls III and IV and most of their expansion packs, so V when it came was just a bit too much of the same. I'll give it another try but for now it's off back to Lovefilm.

I've had a quick go of The Walking Dead, Episode 1. Hard to call it a game, given the low level of interactivity, but the story and graphics are very good and the atmosphere is excellent.

I used to play Warhammer FRP back at school, and for the twenty years since then it's always been, we really must play it again sometime, but we've never got around to it...

As for Warhammer Fantasy Battle, read the rulebook, played the PS1 games, read novels and comics, bought the realtime PC versions, but never played the actual tabletop game! I've probably said this earlier in the thread, but I've always wanted a turn-based videogame of Warhammer. It'd be perfect for XBLA.

My gaming has tailed off a bit since Lovefilm stopping renting out games. I have an Xbox One on pre-order, but may well cancel. At the moment it reminds me a lot of how I felt about the PS3 - the media features look good, but the games aren't exciting me. Plus I own so many big 360 games that I've still to play (e.g. Xcom, Skyrim, Dragon Age 2, Red Dead Revolver, GTA4), especially since Games for Gold kicked in (Fable III, Assassin's Creed 2, Dead Rising 2 are all new to me), that I'm not even looking for new games.

I've been playing Saints Row the Third this last week or so. Having played the Grand Theft Auto series since the first game, I've always looked down on Saints Row as a cynical copycat, but I picked this up in a sale and I have to admit I've played it much more than GTA IV. It's morally despicable, but the costumes and vehicles are fun.

Just bought Puzzle Quest: Galactrix in an XBLA sale. Huge mistake. I played the previous Puzzle Quest for such long, intense sessions that more than once I assumed I would collapse when I got up, like those guys you hear about in internet cafes - and I still carried on playing, thinking I might as well finish the mission first! This one is just as addictive, and better because it's in space.

I picked up some great games in Steam sales recently, most notably Dishonoured and Bioshock Infinite. Also been getting back into the MMO Neverwinter which has just released a new expansion and of course my old favourite Lord of the Rings Online has now released Helm's Deep, allowing you to now journey through the whole of Rohan.

Completed XCOM: Enemy Unknown at last. And finished it the way it ought to be finished: all but one of the squad critically wounded or under enemy mind control, and that last soldier, despite being surrounded by alien brutes and possessed colleagues, managing to snipe the enemy leader.

I've been playing that game in one form or another since 1984 (I was still playing Laser Squad on the Spectrum the week the first PlayStation came out), and it was a real treat to play a new state-of-the-art version.

The  revamped XCOM really is one of my favourite console games of the last few years - thoroughly engrossing, very playable, and a real challenge at the higher difficulty levels...

And yes, that is how the game should be finished.

I love Enemy Unknown but it's one of those games I pop into now and again so may be a while before I finish. I too loved Laser Squad!

I don't think I ever beat Laser Squad.

I picked up a few new console games at Christmas - Batman Arkham Origins, which I haven't touched yet, The Last of Us, which I dipped into and Assassin's Creed Black Flag, which I'm thoroughly addicted to! Pirate's are awesome, but Pirate Assassins are off the scale!

I've been nothing but a pathetically casual gamer this year - Angry Birds Star Wars, Temple Run 2, rubbish like that. Just haven't had the time to get stuck into a proper game. And the children are obsessed with The Sims 3, so the Xbox isn't under my control any more.

Gave up on ever getting the Xbox back under my control and bought a new one for the front room. Came with Halo 4, and I'm enjoying that - Halo 3 seems like it was ages ago. Forza Horizons was also in the box, and I like the driving on that but loathe the broheimian styling.

Having the Xbox in another room means I can get stuck into some of the swearier games around without staying up past my bedtime, like Far Cry: Blood Dragon, which has made me laugh a lot.

Finished Mass Effect 3 this week. 59 hours, spread across two years. Commander Ranjna Shepard saved the galaxy, but she'll be best remembered for winning an epic pull-up challenge and hosting the Citadel's greatest ever party. You haven't lived till you've found a passed-out krogan in your shower.

Moved onto Skyrim now, and the adventures of Scarlet Ranjna, who seems to be in training to become a werewolf. At this rate I should be ready to buy an Xbox One or PS4 by 2020 or so.

Skyrim! I guess you're not doing any writing or editing for the next couple of years then? :)

Has anyone played The Witcher 2? Going fairly cheap on Xbox Live today and wondering whether to buy it.

Thanks - went for it! At my current rate I'll probably be playing it in 2020 - I'm just getting to the end of Dragon Age.

Amazing when you think back to the days when an entire game would fit on a single screen! I finished Dragon Age last night, and over the last five years I've spent sixty hours on it, not even counting the frequent times I had to reload after getting mobbed by Darkspawn. That's a lot of game, and I didn't even read the codex or get to grips with crafting.

Shamefully I had to go down to casual difficulty level for the final battle with the dragon. Seemed a bit unfair - on normal mode, the ballistas and allies barely hurt it, and the ballistas get jammed, and if you don't have a dextrous rogue you're done for. On easy level I just had to stand at one ballista and hit it a dozen times.

Interesting game, though. I liked the way you could set very specific tactics for your allies. Wish I could take the pet dog with me into other games!

dragon age 2 has a good plot but it's ruined by the game play which seems to have too many minor plots with segmented arenas so you end up waiting while the screen reloads just to do a simple task - it's freakin' annoying like a movie that has unnecessary jump-cuts

Excited to get Geometry Wars 3 this week. First game I've bought full price for myself in a while. Maps the gameplay of the original onto spheres (and other interesting three dimensional shapes) like Super Stardust, with a level structure like Mutant Storm. It's a lot of fun. If it's the last hurrah for XBLA - probably my favourite gaming platform of all time - it's a worthy one.

Sounds pretty good! I like the idea of a MMO game that is completely deserted.

My very first experiences of online gaming were with a Sony beta, on the PS2. Long nights of playing SOCOM. I say playing, but what I mean is playing for a few seconds, dying upon my first encounter with the enemy, and then waiting ten minutes for the round to finish so that I could play again - no respawning in that game. Worst possible introduction to online gaming. But maybe I benefited in the long run, since that horrible experience has kept me out of online Call of Duty, Halo, World of Warcraft and all the other online addictions that could have pleasurably soaked up so much time.

I'm very excited by the announcement of Sid Meier's Spaceships. Not often that the title alone is enough to make me want to buy a game. Currently I'm playing XCOM: The Enemy Within.

Picked up Just Cause 2 and Mirror's Edge for three quid in the Xbox sales this week. Mirror's Edge would be brilliant if it just let you run and jump at top speed a bit more, but the fiddly bits slow it down. Just Cause 2 is great fun, especially being able to pull yourself around with your robot arm and use the parachute at any time, jumping from car to car, swinging from helicopters, all that stuff.

Recently picked up Rust, another early access alpha survival game. Building in this is flawless but it is more pvp so you can expect to get smacked down as soon as you progress anywhere.
Also Darkest Dungeon, a great little indie game which is one of the closest interpetations of a D & D dungeon crawl I've seen in computer form.

Approaching the end of Fallout 3. A giant tree man wants me to find his heart and destroy it. Taken a long time to finish it: got my first achievement back in April 2009, when I first left the Vault. My favourite part of it is the Mysterious Stranger, who randomly shows up to help you out in fights, even if you're up in space in a UFO.

After much tergiversation I finally plumped for an Xbox One, and the first game I bought for it was Saints Row IV Reelected, which is as ludicrous as I'd hoped it would be. You become President, Keith David is your Vice-President, and aliens blow the top off the White House. My character looks like She-Hulk with red hair.

I quite like the Xbox One itself. Some nice continuity with the 360: achievements carry over, and some saved games can be transferred. The dashboard is a complete mess, clearly designed with the view that it would never be used because we'd all be summoning games via voice command, but I'm sure that'll be sorted out, and I like being able to use achievement art as the desktop background. I love being able to create screenshots at any time, which will be very handy for reviews. The snap screen thing is nifty but a bit daft; I've used it to keep an eye on the news or sports while playing a game, but novelty aside you could generally do that better with a tablet or your phone.

Playing Alan Wake's American Nightmare, and I was enjoying it a lot until I realised it was going to loop back through the same three levels a third time. It's about a writer, a lot like Stephen King, who is stuck in a nightmare reality based on a the episode he wrote of a tv show called Night Springs. Combat is interesting, in that your torch is as useful as your gun it burns away the darkness around the possessed townspeople.

I gave this a try but hated the torch mechanic. Great premise but couldn't get past that.

I'm back into Lord of the Rings online and Star Trek Online after burning out half way through Fallout 4.

Finished the original Alan Wake too, which I really enjoyed despite it's so-so gameplay. Probably for the same reason I always enjoy romantic comedies about writers.

Now I'm playing Fallout: New Vegas, which I'm enjoying even though (or maybe just because) it's exactly the same as Fallout 3.

Just finished Ryse: Son of Rome, which despite the daft title was a great deal of fun, with some very gory battling against the British. Can't remember the last time I played a game, finished it, then went right back to the beginning and played it all the way through again.

I've been playing Skyrim a lot, too much really, plus the Instant Indie Hits bundle on Xbox One, which was on sale and is very impressive. It includes Hue, a nice little puzzle game where you switch the colour of the backgrounds to hide and reveal objects, OlliOlli,a fun skateboard game, Nova-111, a neat turn-based action game, and Stikbold and Action Henk, which were great for multiplayer. A few games I haven't played yet, but already had my money's worth for it.
