Title: Appointment of a new BFS chair
Post by: Rolnikov on October 22, 2014, 06:22:24 am
Unfortunately, no one stood for chair at the 2014 Annual General Meeting of the society, but an excellent candidate has now come forward, blithely ignoring all my heartfelt warnings against such a course of action. (Ill leave it to them to introduce themselves.)

Interim chairs have been appointed by committee vote before, but there have been expressions of interest from other parties this time and, while wed like it all sorted out quickly, the committee thinks it may not be fair to instantly appoint the first candidate to declare.

So if any other candidates let us know by the end of October that they wish to stand we will hold an online election, using the next committee bulletin to invite members to vote. If no one else stands, the committee will vote on whether to appoint the current candidate.

Hello all! In the words of Mario: "It's me!"

I've only been involved with the BFS since June/July 2011, when I took over as Media Reviews Editor, but I've already seen a fair few changes since then. However, the main underlying thing that is always here is passion from members, old and new, current and lapsed. Passion for the genres the BFS covers and passion for the society as a whole. This is evident here, on the forum, but really is hammered home at events such as Open Nights or FantasyCon.

So I'm throwing my hat in the ring to be BFS Chair because I do think good things can, and will, continue to come from the society but we're in a bit of a limbo state at the moment and the vacuum needs to be filled and the ship needs steadying so we can move forward.

Without a Chair in place I feel that, to some extent, we're limited in how that can happen.

The basics need putting back into place, and I have ideas for the Journal to get that back on track, for one. Plus ideas for special publications, eMemberships and increased outreach through support of Richard and the BFS Events etc. but the recent survey results will be studied carefully so that we go forward with the best interests of the society at heart.

Yes, I know I mentioned at the AGM that available time was a factor and, because of that, I would be appointing a Vice-Chair from within the committee who I can work closely with and who can ensure than the gears don't grind to a halt whenever I'm off in the wilds.

Anyway, I'm heavily glossing over things here. The initial thing is to get things moving and, hopefully, my stepping forward will spur things on.

Thanks for standing, Phil. I think you would be excellent in the post. I think the job of chair would fit more neatly into what time you have available than other BFS jobs might, because it's not so much about working long blocks of time at your desk as it is about keeping in touch with people, answering emails, and just having a really good think about things. Add that to the capable people we currently have in so many committee positions, and I've rarely been quite so optimistic about the society's future.

Congratulations, Phil. Hope you do a great job - as I am sure you will.

All best for the chairman's job. It seems it's a difficult time for the BFS. No one seems to have the time any more to undertake a role long term. This is very bad news for the society. But I hope you can gather the disparate bits and bobs and somehow get the BFS focused on its core services.

Hold off on the congratulations for now, Phil isn't chair quite yet! He will still face an election if anyone else decides to stand. Granted, it would be the first contested election we've had in half a decade (at least that I know of), but you never know.

Rather than an election could we not have a BFS Krypton Factor?

I would be interested in being Vice-Chair so long as it doesn't debar me from sending stories and poems to the Journal.

Ta! Looking forward to it!

Congratulations, Phil. Here's to the BFS building on it's long history in the Fantasy (fantasy and horror) genre.

Thank you, Peter!

I've been overwhelmed by the messages of support I've been getting, both publicly and privately. I think we all know it can be a challenging role and I'll do my very best to do it justice for past, present and all future members of the BFS.

Congrats, Phil!  :)

I'm a past member (as, I think, you know), and I'd be very happy to come back to the fold and rejoin when I see some real changes for the better going on in the BFS. Please, keep us updated (former members as well as existing members) as to how it's going and what's going on. Regular news updates on the website and/or forum would be really useful so that we can all be kept "in the loop". Good luck!

Does Phil's appointment to the post mean we now have a permanent "acting" chair?  ;)
Title: Re: Appointment of a new BFS chair
Post by: Rolnikov on November 08, 2014, 04:33:48 pm
Not quite permanent, but he's the fully-fledged chair till the next AGM, when the chair always has to step down and stand for re-election. I did call myself the acting chair when I took over in 2010, but that was a bit different, I was just helping out while the former chair ran FantasyCon, and just tried to keep things going as they'd been announced rather than applying any of my own policies.

Welcome aboard good captain,

Good luck with the new role Phil,

I'm just trying to renew at the moment but by cheque, some of us are still in the paper age,

Cheers,

Wayne.

I see! Our president is an actor too, and quite a few recent chairs have been on stage - Mark and Guy have done stand-up, Guy and Phil have been in Emmerdale, and I think Lee ran a professional science fiction theatre company for a time. Maybe we should stage the AGM as a play in future...

Hi Wayne - your email appears to be hidden on your profile but zap me an email and I'll fire you an address for your cheque - chair<AT>britishfantasysociety.org (replacing the '<AT>' with an '@') Ta!

Seconded. A proactive Chair like Phil clearly is might see me rejoin sooner rather than later. I look forward to finding out what direction the BFS is heading in now.  :)
