I decided in the end to withdraw my proposal. No one supports it (except maybe Des!) and I didn't want it to still be hanging around all these months later like a bad smell. I've split this discussion out of the AGM 2016 and awards proposals thread to avoid any confusion later in the year.

It is just that I consider Stephen to be uniquely placed within the actual DNA of the current BFS Awards System in recent years, and anything he proposed should have been taken very seriously.

A book collection, 'Dabbling With Diabelli',  of my own favourites among the 1000 plus short fictions published in print mainly in the 1990s under my name, but now substantially revised. Fully typeset with a contents list.

... the front cover is embarrassing. What is it meant to be – Mills and Boon in Space? The guy’s photoshopped pert arse is laughable. The simple question one needs to ask is: would this make you want to pick it up on a display table or in a bookshop? [...]
Sorry to moan but for our flagship fiction and poetry publication we need to do better and be more appropriate.

I am usually a fan of Howard Watts covers, but I have to agree with Allen in what he says above about  this cover.

British Fantasy Awards / Re: AGM 2015 and awards proposals

Our juries have done a terrific job these last few years of picking a series of highly creditable winners,

I agree.

but the system takes a great deal of work to maintain, there’s a limited pool of volunteers to draw on, and, more and more, everyone seems to know each other, making it quite difficult to find truly independent jurors. So I've been mulling over a proposal to take us back to member voting in the final round, but keeping an egregious omissions committee, and adding an statutory two-month gap between the date nominations are announced and the date voting begins, to encourage everyone to read the nominees. What would members think about that?

I would personally support such a proposal.

General Discussion / Re: New Fiction Market

I know nothing about this new fiction market paying $100 per story other than what it says here:

I don't think it is always logical about whether to renumber and/or rename a publication by those who are making decisions about its ethos and audience. It is more an emotional or artistic decision, I feel.

BFS Horizons #63 ?
I think that might give some hinterland of proud history for the Society and its fiction publication.

The Manchester Guardian changed its name to The Guardian in 1959 and maintained its numbering:
