SOLARIS is proud to announce a new acquisition from popular British fantasy novelist MARK CHADBOURN.

THE LORD OF SILENCE is a thrilling new epic fantasy. When the great hero of the city of Idriss is murdered, Vidar, the Lord of Silence, must take his place as chief defender against the mysterious terrors lurking in the dense forest beyond the city?s walls.  But Vidar is a man tormented?by a lost memory and a vampiric jewel that demands the life energy of others. Now, with a killer loose within Idriss, and the threat from without mounting, Vidar must solve a three thousand year old religious mystery to unlock the terrifying secrets of his own past.

A two-time winner of the British Fantasy Award, Mark Chadbourn is the author of eleven novels and one non-fiction book.  A former journalist, he is now a screenwriter for BBC television drama.  His other jobs have included running an independent record company, managing rock bands, working on a production line, and as an engineer?s ?mate?.  He lives in a forest in the English Midlands.

Mark Chadbourn said, ?After several years writing my own particular and peculiar brand of urban fantasy, I wanted to try something completely different.  The Lord of Silence is me cutting loose and experimenting way out of my comfort zone?a completely new world, new characters, a twisted take on magic, and a mystery that spans several thousand years. It?s a sword and sorcery, noir, puzzle-cracking, romance, serial killer, adventure-mystery.  With mad, dancing magicians.?

Publisher Marc Gascoigne added: ?It?s always been puzzling to me why a writer of Mark?s immense talent, and with such a huge British fanbase, has rarely been offered the opportunity to release his books in the US. It?s time to remedy that, with the best book of his career so far.?

THE LORD OF SILENCE will be released in 2009 in the US and UK.

Please note ? this book will be *in addition* to my regularly scheduled novels published by Victor Gollancz. ~ Mark

Critically-acclaimed novelist Deborah J Miller has accepted an invitation to join The Write Fantastic collective of UK fantasy authors.

Deborah has been a published writer since her short story Dinosaur was shortlisted for the Ian St James Award in 1993. She is best known for her Last Clansman series (starting with Talisker in 2001, going on to Dark Thane in 2002 and ending with Lore Bringer in 2004) which was published under the pen-name, Miller Lau.  The first book of her new Swarmthief trilogy - Swarmthief?s Dance - was published by Tor UK in 2005 and the next instalment - Swarmthief?s Treason - is due for release in 2007.

The Write Fantastic comprises Sarah Ash, James Barclay, Chaz Brenchley, Mark Chadbourn, Juliet McKenna and Stan Nicholls.  It is an initiative  to introduce fantasy fiction to readers who have never tried the genre, and to show those who have drifted away the breadth and depth in current fantasy writing.

The group's regular events include appearances at literary festivals, libraries, conventions and bookshops to conduct panels, readings, Q & As and workshops.  In the last few months, the Write Fantastic has appeared at literary festivals in Sheffield, Lincoln and Derby, the Tolkien Fesitval in Birmingham, Fantasycon and Heffers Bookshop, Cambridge, Science Fiction and Fantasy event.

Founding member Jessica Rydill has now opted for associate status and will no longer be appearing at events.

From our website: "Contemporary fantasy fiction is about far more than escape to other realities. Freed of the constraints and preconceptions of other kinds of fiction, it holds up a mirror to reflect on this world and time through the prism of vivid characters and enthralling drama that engage the imagination like no other genre.
"Our work covers the gamut of fantasy writing from orcs and dragons, through high heroic swords and sorcery to reimagining of myth and history, and the magics of matter, mind and spirit."

British Fantasy Awards / 'Hounds of Avalon' recommendation
« on: June 20, 2006, 03:23:24 pm »
Very pleased to see my novel 'The Hounds of Avalon' has been recommended for Best Novel, and thanks to everyone who scribbled it on to the form.  That makes six years in a row at the recommendation stage, and for the last four out of five years I've made it through to the short list - clearly you enjoy teasing me only to disappoint at the last.  My secret plan is just to wear you down through attrition...  'Perhaps he'll go away if we let him win one year...'

For those who haven't read the book, Hounds of Avalon is set at the point where horror and fantasy collide.  It's a dark tale of the last days, with the final bastion of humanity struggling against an overwhelming power from the outer darkness...but in a way you haven't seen before...

Thanks again for the recognition...

Promote Your Projects / Book of Shadows - Mark Chadbourn press release
« on: January 23, 2006, 11:07:01 am »

Award-winning fantasy author Mark Chadbourn will publish the long-demanded prequel to his successful Age of Misrule books in graphic novel format.
Book of Shadows will come out in two comic books in April 2006 from Image Comics, before being collected in hardcover for the bookstore market in 2007.
Painted artwork will be provided by acclaimed artist Bo Hampton, best-known for his work on Batman.
It is the first time an author has jumped mediums to present the continuation of a highly-successful story ? beating by several months horror author Stephen King who has decided to go the same route for his Dark Tower series.
Chadbourn, the winner of the British Fantasy Award in 2003, says: ?I know it?s a gamble ? some of my readers may find it hard to adjust to the graphic novel format.
?But I?ve been a comic book fan all my life and I think there?s enormous potential in the medium, that many novelists have not recognised.
?It?s a particularly fertile medium for fantasy authors, especially when you?re partnered with a remarkable artist who can bring your dreams alive.
?When I was approached by comics editor Joe Pruett to try this path I jumped at the chance.  So Book of Shadows is the first ? more stories will follow.?
There is a lot of pressure.  Readers have been demanding a prequel to The Age of Misrule sequence since it was published, to discover the background to many of the mysteries revealed in those books.
World?s End, Darkest Hour and Always Forever have sold-out multiple printings and have been translated into numerous languages around the globe.  Both World?s End and Always Forever were runners up for the August Derleth Award for Best Novel, the British Fantasy Society?s top prize.
Book of Shadows prepares the ground for the premise of The Age of Misrule.  The gods of Celtic mythology have returned to our modern world after an absence of 2,300 years.  The Age of Reason is crumbling in the face of magic and mysticism as the gods manipulate humanity in a coming war against their age-old race enemies, the demonic, shape-shifting Fomorii.
Chadbourn adds: ?One of my hopes is that it will get regular book readers picking up some comics and graphic novels because there?s a lot of fantastic work being done in that medium at the moment.  And for that matter, that some comic book readers will dip in to a few books without pictures!?
Anticipating that some of his readers may not have the first idea how to locate the comics, Chadbourn has done a deal with a UK comic shop, Ace Comics, which will take orders by email, phone or post and mail out the relevant issues.  Full details on his website:
It?s the start of a busy year for Chadbourn.  His new novel, Jack of Ravens, will be published by Victor Gollancz in June 2006 and an omnibus edition of The Age of Misrule will be published in October 2006.

Fantasy author Mark Chadbourn has agreed terms with publishers Victor Gollancz for what they describe as ?one of the most ambitious fantasies ever imagined?.  The three-book sequence, with the working title of THE VIEW ACROSS EXISTENCE, will begin publication in the late summer of 2006.

Here?s how the publisher describes it:

?A quest of epic reach, ranging from the dawn of humanity to the modern age?spanning the globe under the mythologies of five great cultures?and finally crossing the barrier between life and death?

A love story with all Existence hanging in the balance.  A high adventure of dazzling sword fights and apocalyptic wars in the days leading up to Ragnarok, the End-Times.  A breath-taking surreal vision of twisting realities and altered perceptions where nothing is quite as it seems.

Archaeologist Jack Churchill wakes to find himself in the times of the Celtic tribes, with the memory of how he got there fading fast.  All he knows is that the woman he loves waits for him in the 21st century, and by shifting to the timeless Otherworld of Tir n?a N?og he can while out the days and years until his era rolls round again.

But there is a malign intelligence also waiting in the present day, and it will do anything in its power to prevent Jack?s return.  In a universe where time and space are meaningless, its tendrils stretch back through the years?

But that isn?t the only threat: a former friend, now corrupted by the darkness, was also thrown back to the Iron Age.  He is Jack?s dark reflection, but just as driven.  And they both love the same woman??

Victor Gollancz Editorial Director Jo Fletcher says: ?Gollancz is thrilled to
have signed up THE VIEW ACROSS EXISTENCE: this new series is gloriously ambitious, covering as it does more than 2,000 years, five mythologies and multiple dimensions. This sort of scope is all-too-rare in modern fantasy and coupled with Mark's always-meticulous research and his superb grasp of plot and characterisation, I am sure we are going to have a bestseller on our hands.?

Mark Chadbourn adds: ?Of all the genres, fantasy is the one that should be pushing at the boundaries of imagination.  THE VIEW ACROSS EXISTENCE is an immense undertaking ? the research alone will take many months ? but my aim was to drive myself to the limits of fantastic story-telling.  I?m very pleased my publishers were so excited by the proposal they agreed to commit themselves to such an ambitious project alongside me.  And should anyone be in any doubt, this tale will be as much of an epic quest for me as it will be for the reader.  I hope I come back in one piece.?

Just to let everyone know my new book is out in hardback and tradepaperback from Victor Gollancz.

It is, as the publicity says, ?an evocative and awe-inspiring contemporary fantasy with strong links to Arthurian and Celtic myth.?

From the blurb: ?As our modern world reels from the sudden return of magic, the plague strikes without warning.  Nothing could stop its progress, not medicines, not prayer.  The first sign of the disease is black spots at the base of the fingers; an agonising death quickly follows.  But this is no ordinary disease?

Caitlin Shepherd, a lowly GP, is allowed to cross the veil into the mystical Celtic Otherworld to find a cure.  Her search takes her on a quest to the end of a land of dreams and nightmares to petition the gods.

Caitlin is humanity?s only hope, but she carries a terrible burden: a consciousness shattered into five distinct personalities?and one of them may not be human.?
