TV and Film / The Handmaid's Tale

I've just finished watching season 2 of The Handmaid's Tale and I thoroughly enjoyed it. So, to be fair to Margaret Atwood, I now plan to read the book.

Epic. I'll say no more because spoilers are evil.

For those who are still catching up, how about a bit of fun from Coldplay to warm you up (US Red Nose Day - 2015)...

General Discussion / Fantasy and the Internet

I love it when genres fuse or new genres emerge.

Can anyone point me towards the fusion of magic and the Internet? I've written a trilogy in this space, but I'd love to explore how other authors have tackled the subject matter.

Ancient magic has infected the Internet… is this the end for civilisation?

Previously - Ancient magic has transported Tung, a young thief, and Madrick, a has-been wizard, across a millennium. The powerful magic they brought with them was unwittingly spread over the Internet by Michael, a hacker whose good intentions far outstripped his common sense.

Problem - Civilisation simply can’t handle the unforeseen consequences of the magic and the only people who can prevent the ensuing catastrophe are the same three who created the mess in the first place.

Now - To make matters even worse, evil wizards have followed Tung and Madrick through time. They’re determined to hunt down and destroy the pair, and with them, our modern way of life. Saving the world has just got a whole lot harder.

The Black Conspiracy is the Dark Tidings sequel, but it can be read in isolation. If you want to laugh while the world is coming to an end, then this may be the book for you.

I hope some of you get the chance to check it out, and if you do, please let me know what you think.

The Black Conspiracy is available from amazon.co.uk

Thank you for looking.

Ask the Authors and Artists! / Ken Magee - Funny Contemporary Fantasy
« on: August 27, 2012, 05:24:03 pm »
Hi, I'm Ken Magee from sunny Ireland and I write funny contemporary fantasy. The best compliment my writing has received (to date) was a review which started "Imagine the worlds of Terry Pratchett and Dan Brown coming together...".

Dark Tidings is the first of a series of books which live under the tagline Ancient magic meets the Internet. Here's the blurb...

Quote
What happens when ancient magic meets the internet? One thing is certain, modern life will never be the same again.

A thousand years ago, a young thief, Tung, and a disgraced wizard, Madrick, are thrust together in an executioner’s dungeon. In the darkness, Madrick reveals an incredible secret about a legendary spell. The great spell helps them escape their prison cell... and eventually their century.

Catapulted into the present day, their lives collide with Michael, a computer hacker who plans to destroy the world’s largest bank. But sinister people are tracking their every move and they will stop at nothing to steal their spell.

I get 95% of my books by trawling Amazon. I use lots of the search features including best seller lists and 'also bought'.

Am I missing a trick... where do you find your next great fantasy read?

Dark Tidings is my début novel. It's a contemporary fantasy with plenty of humour. Here's the blurb...

I really hope some of you will find the time to check it out because I'd love to hear what you think.

Thank you, Ken.

Introductions / Hello from Ireland
« on: January 21, 2012, 05:48:19 pm »
Hello everyone, My name is Ken Magee and I'm an... author. I'm also an avid reader and I love participating in discussions about books and book-related topics.

I have always been intrigued by words and writing. It took me 30 years to finish my first book (write not read!), but I got there. Dark Tidings is a contemporary fantasy with a good sprinkling of humour.

I hope people to meet a few fantasy fans on BFS so I can learn lots and exchange views. I'm also hoping some of you will check out Dark Tidings.

I look forward to meeting you all.
