Thanks for the tips, I'm only just getting into the genre, so will add these to my list.

Have to admit, I kind of like Green Day, although I refuse to relate them to punk as a genre. Guess this genre issue is a problem everywhere! Hehe!

I just did a search on Steampunk on this forum and didn't find anything. I just wondered what people think of the genre, good, bad, indifferent?

Any recommendations?

Hearty congratulations to all those listed! Well done!

I think the point is that there are clear benefits of joining a circle run by the BFS with all it's connections, plus it is something else the BFS can offer as a benefit of membership.

There are plenty of circles around, online and in the real world, I go to one regularly but it isn't fantasy focussed. I would like the added benefit of feedback from other writers within the genre.

Come down, you'd be more than welcome! We meet every Wednesday. The website is here :

http://www.verulamwriterscircle.org.uk/

Of course, there will also be Whirlpool on here soon too! It hasn't really started properly yet, but see the Announcements and Suggestions thread for Writing Circle Chatter. If you're interested, post on there and you should then be added to the group. I'm assuming you're a full member of BFS...

Apologies! To clarify what I actually meant was that there could be a paid membership to join the writing forum only, which could be a separate closed forum as discussed earlier in the thread. That way people could join that but not have to join the society if they choose, and although there would still be a risk it would prevent the access being available to the whole world. The member benefit, for those joining the society, would then be that access is included in the full membership price.

It would also help to discourage unscrupulous people as if a writer knows they only posted their work there, then it was only available to that number of people. If the members know that, they're less likely to cheat. You can't completely avoid the risk, the whole thing is based on trust after all, but it might help to reduce it.

It should also be made clear that the BFS are not able to take responsibility for the security of work posted beyond ensuring that passwords are carefully managed.

OMG! Jen I have those bookcases, complete with corner units and CD racks, IKEA, right? Not just books and stairs that go together then, if it wasn't for IKEA, many books would be homeless...  ;D

Lou, I didn't catch that comment from Neil Gaiman previously, makes me feel a little better. Now I can just say that I have a well developed reference library, with all my non-fiction titles and a developing fiction library. I do also have the comfy chair and cat, so it's a work in progress.  :P

Just wondering what happened with these? Are they available for me to use yet? If so, how do I do it? (Please bear in mind I'm just learning how to do these clever things!)

I will start making a point of mentioning that I'm a member from now on. Also, are you on twitter? I've just checked my web stats and found that I increased my traffic from 431 last month to 1037 this month, I've only been on twitter a few weeks so that is definitely a factor (although some of it will be bots I guess.)

Thanks,

Sandra

Hi,

Just a couple of thoughts to follow on from CarolineC's comments.

Cross genre could be posted in more than one place until it becomes clear where it should sit, which would probably come out in the critique.

The issue of non members joining leaves it open to the risk of plagiarism (could we have a Ridyard filter?!) perhaps there could be a forum only membership, with BFS members getting it as part of the package? This would mean a perk for being a BFS member but meaning it isn't exclusive, keeping with the ethic of celebrating fantasy in it's broadest sense.

His work is amazing, there was a time when I'd have jumped in the car and driven down specially. Nowadays, can't afford the petrol.  :'(
