Hail to the non-fantasy!  :D

John Gray "Straw Dogs" - compelling argument about the bleakness of human nature.

Sarah Murgatroyd "The Dig Tree" - fascinating recounting of the ill-fated expedition in 1860 to cross Australia's uncharted heart.

Steven Mithen "After The Ice" - superb overview of human cultural evolution from 20,000 BC to 5,000 BC.

Robert Hughes "The Fatal Shore" - the almost unbelievable true history of the colonisation of Australia; mind-boggling in places.

Gabrielle Walker "Snowball Earth" - explores the concept of complete-ice-ups in our geological past. Fascinating...

Oh yeah, and, more relevantly  :) :-
Jacqueline Carey "Kushiel's Dart" - buy this to discover how good fantasy can be even without elves and dwarves! Superb.

The forthcoming Nick Gifford "Flesh And Blood" is a triffic read, highly recommended.

That's enough recommend-whittering,
