Where to send your books etc for review...
« on: March 03, 2009, 11:37:39 PM »
Here's the beginning of a list of potential reviewers and reviewing publications. I'll kick off, but feel free to add yourselves or any other places you know about... Where possible include a link to the contact details rather than the actual addresses (because they can so easily go out of date).

If sending books do be polite and remember that some of these places get lots of books to review and won't be able to guarantee a review.

British Fantasy Society

Website: here
Contact: Book Reviews Editor is Phil Lunt, Comics Reviews Editor is Jay Eales, Indie Press & RPG Editor is Craig Lockley and Media Reviews Editor is Guy Adams.
Notes: ebooks accepted, but may take longer to place with a reviewer.

Birmingham Science Fiction Group

Website: http://www.birminghamsfgroup.org.uk/index.html
Contact: http://www.birminghamsfgroup.org.uk/About.html
Notes: reviews appear in the monthly Brum Group newsletter.

The Fix Online

Website: http://thefix-online.com
Contact: http://thefix-online.com/contact/
Reviews: Speculative poetry and fiction in short story, novelette, and novella lengths.
Notes: Does not review vanity, self-published, or unpublished works. Contact first regarding electronic submissions.

GUD Magazine

Website: http://www.gudmagazine.com
Contact: http://www.gudmagazine.com/get-reviewed/how-to.php
Reviews: Prefers physical copies, but will consider pdfs. Prefers small press.
Notes: Always query first. Not so keen on self-published work.

Goodreads
Website: http://www.goodreads.com/giveaway
Notes: Offer your book as a lottery to Goodreads readers

Interzone/Black Static

Website: http://ttapress.com/
Contact: http://ttapress.com/contact/
Notes: Probably best to query before sending. Black Static's reviewer, Pete Tennant, has written here, here and here about how he chooses which books to review and the kind of books he likes to be sent.

Morpheus Tales

Website: http://www.morpheustales.com/
Contact: morpheustales@blueyonder.co.uk
Notes: Magazine of sf, horror and fantasy. Reviews appear online and in the magazine.

Tales from the Black Abyss
Website: http://talesfromtheblackabyss.com/
Contact: http://talesfromtheblackabyss.com/about/
Notes: Main areas of interest are horror and dark fiction, but also features historical, thrillers, crime, fantasy and SF. No ebooks or pdfs.

Theaker's Quarterly Fiction
Contact: Stephen Theaker, theakers@silveragebooks.com (email for postal address)
Website: www.theakersquarterly.blogspot.com
Reviews: science fiction, fantasy, novels, comics, not so keen on anthologies.
Notes: prefers to review from ebook. Reviews appear on blog and in magazine. Okay to send books without querying first.

PS Publishing don't run reviews in PostScripts, but their review coverage (click here) can point you in the direction of lots of reviewers - not to mention some great books!

A friend of mine runs a fantasy and horror book review blog called, simply enough, Graeme's Fantasy Book Review. He gets bundles of books and writes as a fan, not a critic.

I am the proprieter, CEO of, and tea boy for, the Exaggerated Press Corporation...

Okay, I run the very occasional Exaggerated Press, part of which is the Exaggerated Web Site. Eventually this will be home to a fiction e-zine called Wordland but at the moment I'm concentrating my publishing, editorial and tea-making energies on our next antholgy, "The Monster Book for Girls" (open for subs until 27th Feb, guidelines on the site).

The site includes a review section and if you would like to have your latest publication reviewed on The Exaggerated Web Site, let me know either here, or at terrypgrimwood@hotmail.co.uk.

The Exaggerated Web Site is at http://exaggeratedpress.weebly.com/index.html.

Cheers
   Terry Grimwood

I'd add Fantasy Faction to the list. Staff of a half-dozen volunteer reviewers seem to tear through most stuff that comes their way. I think it is mostly high fantasy, traditional stuff and a bit of new weird, but it never hurts to ask.

http://fantasy-faction.com/

For self-published authors, there's an area of the forum set aside to get work in front of reviewers/bloggers:

TFF Reviews collects a list of titles offered for review, primarily from small or indie presses, but also occasionally including short movies, games, music, etc., and sends them to our reviews team once a month. We don't ask for a copy until and unless a reviewer asks to take a look at the book/etc. (We accept e-books, but hardcopy is preferred by many reviewers.) Review guidelines are at http://reviews.futurefire.net/p/guidelines.html. We lean towards long, in-depth, analytic rather than gushing reviews. (New reviewers always welcome too.)

Also: for our book-publishing arm I've started collating a GoogleDoc with a list review venues (big literary ones as well as SFF) and contact details. It's been shared with and contributed to by other small presses, some of whom prefer that it not be made public, but I'm happy to share it privately with any small press who would find it useful (and if you have suggestions to add—please!). Contact me off-line.

SFBook accepts reviews from anyone who submits to us, provided we have the time to read them.

http://www.sfbook.com

You can contact the reviewers individually from their email addresses, or email Ant directly to be added to the main list.

I get an "untrusted certificate" warning when I follow the link above, Allen. If you link just to http://sfbook.com it works fine.
