What are you currently reading..?

What are you reading at the moment?

I'm reading At the Mountains of Mourning by Lois McMaster Bujold, from the Baen Books free library. Good so far.

The Ancient Greeks for Dummies.   ;D  (What?!)   ;)

Also, am just trying to decide between Juliet McKenna's new one - Irons in the Fire, or Jaine Fenn's Principles of Angels.

But, have just finished Mike Carey's Thicker Than Water which was totally brilliant.   ;D  Better than Hellblazer, shockingly!   :o

An odd mixture in my case:
The Fourth Black Book of Horror
The Complete Stories and Poems of Lewis Carroll

I picked up the latter in a charity shop recently. I haven't read either Alice ... story since I was a kid and I wondered if they'd have the same magic - they do! Plus there's lots of Carroll's verse I'd never read before - amazing work.  :)

Having a comic-books (well, graphic novels, anyway) binge, lately...

Finished epic-style Project Superpowers (Dynamite), and Earth X (Marvel), both by Alex Ross & Jim Krueger.
Starting on New Avengers and Mighty Avengers series, and I finally got around to ordering volumes 2 and 3 of Ross' Justice trilogy.

Anyone read those Ultimate X-Men books?
I keep wondering if they're as much fun as the Ultimate 'Avengers' series.

I'm dipping into 20th Century Ghosts now and then.  Pop Art was genius.   ;D

And some art books.
If wishes were horses then we'd all be eating steak.
Jayne Cobb, Firefly.

But ... if fishes were courses then we'd all be eating hake ...

Reading Murakami's "Norwegian Wood" at home and Terry Grimwood's "Exaggerated Man" at work. Also picked up Russell Hoban's "Linger Awhile" secondhand today, so might take that into work too - haven't read his stuff before, but the cover sold me!

An advance copy of Mark Newton's Nights of Villjamur; Rowland Price's Vulcan 607 (the story of how the aging bomber was roped back into service during the Falkland's Conflict); and, The Secret War by MFW Curran.

(Rather stupidly, picked up a copy of J G Ballard's complete story collection - 1000+ pages - from the local library....)

I'm reading Tom Swift and the Visitor from Planet X, from Project Gutenberg. Silly stuff, but I like the "anything goes" spirit of it. If they'd had these in my local library when I was a kid I'd have been a big fan.

It's rather good.

Empire by David Dunwoody... a survival zombie tale set in 22nd Century years after the outbreak. Good so far, with some neat twists!

Chris - I know what you mena about the Ballard short stories...

I've just started The Wailing Asteroid, by Murray Leinster, which so far seems to be a science fiction screwball comedy along the lines of Monkey Business. More sf novels should star Cary Grant...

Before that it was Halo, by Tom Maddox, which wasn't half as punkish as I expected cyberpunk novels to be, but it was still good.

Have just finished CJ Lines' 'Filth Kiss' - a gory small-town rotten to the core with black-magic; just about to start the new Black Static, and then into holiday reading mode for: 'The Lovers' by John Connolly, followed swiftly by Michael Marshall's 'Bad Things' and 'Glister' by John Burnisde...

I read that when it was first published (early 1990s?), and remember it tried for 'cool' but lacked 'edginess' required for cyberpunk.

Just finished Warren Ellis' Iron Man: Extremis, a brilliant graphic novel that's effective as a SFnal re-birth for the hero character and a revised origin story in keeping with the recent film version.

For the first time in a while, I'm reading something for pleasure instead of review.

Fallen by Tim Lebbon, and I actually bought it! Forgot what it's like to buy your own books.
