Just finished "The Dead of Winter" by Chris Priestley, and have piles to read and review.

A Tale of Two Cities - I've read a fair few Dickens in my time but this seems to be the easiest to read, so far.  It's pretty good, the description of drawing traitors was sickeningly vivid.  And I like the way that characters pop up again in a "ah, now I remember" sort of fashion.

I have to say Little Dorrit is still my fave.

I'm reading lots of Matthew Hughes - in leisurely but consecutive succession I've just read The Spiral Labyrinth and Hespira, and now I'm reading Majestrum, with The Gist Hunter also waiting on the Kindle. Just my cup of tea. Matthew has agreed to let me interview him for the Christmas issue of TQF - the first time we'll ever have run an interview, I think - so I'm currently thinking up appropriate questions. Suggestions welcome!

And since the last time I posted in this thread I must have read ten or twenty Archie books. There are loads of them on Comixology, nearly all of them very cheap. I even bought an "I'm with Jughead" t-shirt, due to our shared love of over-eating.

Although I do worry that it might be open to misinterpretation when worn in the UK...  :-[

I read somewhere recently that they were planning on remaking it.

It just wouldn't be right without Mel Blanc doing all the voices and the Kid From The Munsters as Milo.

I *love* The Phantom Tollbooth. It was a joy to introduce my son to it when he was old enough, and I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the Humbug.

EDIT: In fact... here.

I reject your reality and substitute it with my own.

It's been a good year for introducing my son to classic books, The Wizzard of Oz, Alice In Wonderland, The Phantom Tollbooth, The Halloween Tree, Owl Service

Just been reading Elliott O'Donell's English Hauntings, one of numerous books of ghost stories that he produced over 50 years or so. I'm not quite sure whether to categorise them as novels of non-fiction (they're allegedly the latter), but I get the impression he genuinely recorded stories that other people related, and then embellished them with his own "experiences" to make them more gripping and detailed.

Got to say they were much better than the M.R. James stories, which were too ott for my taste... at least some of these ones were understated little hauntings, although I confess the idea of a malevolent mass of phantasmal fungus that infects anything walking around its field was a little much...

I remember reading an Elliott O'Donnell book a few years ago, which spent only something like three or four pages per ghost story (supposedly factual), and it was rivetting reading. They went too fast for you to get bored, though some were incredibly bizarre.

I certainly enjoyed it, no matter how much was made up (I confess I did get suspicious that there were never friends available to accompany him when he decides to break into a spooky house). Once I feel I can cope with another dose of malevolent elemental grandfather clocks (with huge grey feet and an arm that comes out of the pendulum casing  :o), I'll look for another...

I see they're re-issuing some as well, which is good - the originals seem to be hard to find.

Ooh, excellent. Thanks for these... can't download them at the moment, but it'll be something to look forward to when I get back for Christmas.  :)

Just finished Jorge Luis Borges' The Widow Ching - Pirate, a Penguin mini modern that included the title story plus four others. I'd read "Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius" and "Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote" before, but can never read them often enough.

Then started another Penguin mini modern, Bluebeard by Angela Carter. Good as it is, I won't feel I've really "got" it until I dig out my copy of Perrault's Contes and compare them to see what she's changed.

Stephen King's Just after Sunset - the first story is my favourite so far.

back on Dostoevsky which is hilarious and sick and leaves me feeling a little dirty for laughing at how ridiculous people can be when they deal with awful situations   :)

also dipping in and out of a 1950s American school reader on Greek mythology that tiptoes through all the sexy bits by trying to make it sound arty - full of sniggers - someone please bring back innocence, the kids nowadays are missing out on a lot of fun
