Ploughing through missed classics here. On to The City and The City now. First 50 pages are bewildering but I'm getting my head round it now. I'm really enjoying the parallels to the real world, in particular the vaguely European Middle-Eastern border.

Just finished Crystal Lake's e-collection "The Outsiders" and reviewed it for the BFS; and now started Ellen Datlow's "The Doll Collection" to review for Interzone.

Reading Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Omnibus 1, and it's one of the best Star Wars comics I've read. Excellent art, an interesting bunch of characters, good stories. It's a bit like Firefly.

Reading Nexus Omnibus 5 by Mike Baron, from Dark Horse, and will probably go straight on to Omnibus 6 when I'm finished. I've also been reading Uprooted by Naomi Novik but it's so much like Howl's Moving Castle - and twice as long - that I feel I've already read it.

I've been through a few things recently: Emily St John Mandel's Station Eleven - Very good in terms of structure, character development and her style, not sure the Lear angle worked for me though; Rupert Thomson's Soft - Typically excellent, including a terrifying passage where someone starts losing their mind, but bit of a duff ending; Nick Harkaway's Tigerman - Just great; Walter Moer's The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear - Lot of fun, but suffered from being predictable, lacked Douglas Adam's anarchic edge; James Smythe's The Echo - This really caught me by surprise. It uses a lot of familiar elements but still shocked me in places and the second half is really compelling stuff. Greater than the sum of its parts, like a nihilistic 2001.

I'm reading Sean Wallace's Mammoth Book of Steampunk at the moment. I don't read a lot of SP, but there's some good stuff: the amazingly fierce postcolonial “Five Hundred and Ninety-Nine” and the gorgeous “Selin That Has Grown in the Desert” are the stand-outs so far for me.

Just read The Glorkian Warrior and the Mustache of Destiny. Funniest thing I've read since Groo. (Although there are currently new issues of Groo coming out every month again, so maybe that doesn't say as much as it used to!) It's not out till March 2016, so don't let your children grow up too quickly.

I've been reading the Penguin Little Black Classics, so thanks for suggesting I take another look at those, Joshua! I've read How a Ghastly Story Was Brought to Light by a Common or Garden Butcher's Dog by Johann Peter Hebel, A Slip Under the Microscope by H.G. Wells, and Wailing Ghosts by Pu Songling, and they were all very good.

Special FantasyCon edition here - I just read Nina Allan's Spin. Excellent stuff, the amalgamation of fantasy, SF and myth is possibly flawless. Really, really fine stuff.

Nina is an absolutely brilliant author, particularly at novelette / novella length.

I've been reading a lot of Savage Sword of Conan, in the Dark Horse omnibuses. Always comes as a shock to be reminded that Conan is an out-and-out murderer, quite happy to kill innocent guards who happen to be in his way. But I do enjoy the comic. Each issue of that magazine was a graphic novel in itself.

just finished Ovid's The Fall of Icarus which was rather fun

but I can't help thinking that women were regarded rather casually by the storytellers  :-\

I just finished Lagoon by Nnedi Okorafor which is an interesting one. Seems to be deliberately chaotic and messing with my preconceptions of the Novel. Does lots of things we think of as 'poor' writing but I suspect were used deliberately, and with interesting effect. Might be it feels too raw and shapeless for some but she's making an interesting point, I reckon. Definitely works as a way to shake up reading habits.
