Andrew - The Affirmation comes recommended by my resident Priest fan as well. Meanwhile, I've been catching up on classics I missed so I've now read The Dispossessed, The Drowned World and Slaughterhouse 5 at long last - results varied. I also read The Three by Sarah Lotz, just to prove I'm still relevant and Rawblood by Catriona Ward because Nina Allan was raving about it. So if there's a moral to be had, it's probably: Listen to Nina Allan.

I finished The Extremes, George, and enjoyed it; but I think The Affirmation is probably my favourite so far.

Currently reading "The Yiddish Policeman's Union" by Michael Chabon, and "Use Once, Then Destroy" by Conrad Williams (short stories).

Currently reading The Mallet of Loving Correction, a collection of John Scalzi's blog posts on Whatever. I wouldn't want to read it all in one sitting, but it's perfect for when I'm waiting for the children to emerge from their respective schools.

And also the Rising Stars Compendium Vol. 1, a huge collection of J. Michael Straczynski's comic about 113 people with superpowers, all from the same small town. The story is okay, but the artwork isn't very good.

I bought some months ago and am slowly chugging through my reading pile - I didn't realise there were sequels
there now is a serious risk that my library may increase inversely proportional to my bank balance

Spent a month reading lots of comics and little books. Best were The Projected Girl by Lavie Tidhar, Six-Gun Gorilla by Simon Spurrier and Jeff Stokely, and Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson. I read all ten volumes of Transmetropolitan one after the other, and really enjoyed it.

Now I'm planning to spend a month just reading books for review, beginning with The Last Weekend by Nick Mamatas.

I'm trying to get through my backlog. This month's reading list is:

• The Man in the High Castle - Philip K Dick
• The Left Hand of Darkness - Ursula K LeGuin
• Sherlock Holmes vs. Dracula - Loren D. Estleman

Unfortunately, the last book I read (Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan) turned out to be the first in a trilogy, so I suspect next month will start with a visit to the library to find parts two and three.

Just started I Am Providence by Nick Mamatas, about a writer murdered at a Lovecraft convention (at least so far). Also reading Hunters & Collectors by M. Suddain, which is a lot like a prose version of Transmetropolitan, but about a food critic instead of a journalist.

being a slow reader, I'm strolling by Spectral's horror anthology, dipping in now and again, some very good tales in there, about halfway through, now. A lovely collection so far; a credit to the writers and editor.

Just read Travel Light by Naomi Mitchison, the Small Beer Press edition. Uses defamiliarization very cleverly as a baby princess is spirited away from a murderous parent to live with bears and dragons.

Currently reading Archivist Wasp by Nicole Kornher-Stace, another book from Small Beer Press, about a teenager who became an archivist of ghosts by winning a fight to the death with her predecessor. It's really good.

I am (or was, not sure yet) reading Ann Aguirre's Grimspace. I'm only a few dozen pages from the end, but I got so sick of all the characters’ motivations and emotional lives being apparently written by a twelve year-old boy that even not yet knowing how the plot to breed space navigators and challenge the "Corps" for dominance of the trade routes turns out isn't really tempting me to carry on. Also for a story set in the far far future, a lot of boring prejudices and assumptions haven't even been challenged. Very odd to be 85% of the way through a book when I decide to chuck it, but there you go.
