I'm now reading Daniel José Older’s Midnight Taxi Tango, a “Bone Street Rumba” novel and sequel to the excellent Half-Resurrection Blues. Dark, funny, street-smart, lyrical, genuinely scary, and totally believable New York streets urban fantasy. I half believe some of this stuff is true…

I'm reading The Drowning Eyes by Emily Foster, about a young woman pursued by baddies who tricks her way onto a sailing ship. I was able to buy half a dozen of the Tor.com novellas with the promotional credits I got back on Xmas presents ordered at no rush delivery from Amazon. A good incentive to do all my Christmas shopping early next time!

I've been reading Gardens of the Moon, first in the Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson. I loved the novella spin-offs he did for PS Publishing, so no surprise that I'm thoroughly enjoying this too. It's fantasy without the boring bits.

Just finished Waking in Winter by Deborah Biancotti, about a woman stationed on an frozen planet who sees a giant mermaid under the ice. Other people see different things. It's very good.

Just read Final Girls by Mira Grant, a Subterranean Press novella about a scientist who uses horror film scenarios in virtual reality simulators for therapy, e.g. putting a pair of sisters through a nightmare scenario together so that they get on again afterwards. It was really good.

I am currently reading The Couple Next Door, which I am enjoying immensely. After I have finished that, I plan to start The Fireman by Joe Hill, which looks absolutely awesome!

Just read the first sixteen volumes of Powers, by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming. Not bad, but the spelling was terrible.

I’ve just finished reading WARRIOR WOMEN, a fabulous collection of SFF tales edited by Paula Guran. It includes some wonderful stories from the likes of Kristine Kathryn Rusch, Theodora Goss, Caitlin R. Kiernan, Seanan McGuire, George R. R. Martin and many more! As the blurb on the back cover says, “compelling tales of powerful women.”

Just finished Frankenstein in Baghdad by Ahmed Saadawi (on this year's Booker shortlist), a wonderful bit of allegorical weirdness about the Iraq invasion and its aftermath. And now onto re-reading Philip Reeve's traction city series in anticipation of the new book and the movie.
A moment later, the world's first all-purpose human being strode eastward, whistling.
'A tasty world,' it reflected cheerfully. 'A very tasty world.'

I’ve just read THE SHORES OF VANAHEIM, Book 3 in Matt Larkin’s ‘Gods of the Ragnarok Era’ series. This, as the author says, “is a dark fantasy retelling of Norse mythology, chronicling Odin’s rise to godhood.” I really liked it but appreciate that ‘dark’ Norse fantasy may not be for everyone!
