Anyone remember Fear magazine?
« on: May 01, 2009, 07:28:55 PM »
Hi All

I can't get this magazine out of my head, so I've started a series of posts on the wonderful late 80s title that introduced me to much of what I love now... and I'd love to hear from anyone else who has fond (or otherwise) memories of the magazine, and stories to tell!? http://www.mathewfriley.com/2009/05/fear-issue-1/

With best wishes

Mathew

Anyone remember Fear magazine?

Yes I do. Didn't John Gilbert edit it -- or am I misremembering things (and that wouldn't be unusual)?

I certainly remember it. They published one of my very few science fiction stories, oddly enough.

I used to buy this and others without fail during the later days of my teenage years... when I worked for Athena Bookshop my locker was bursting with these magazines.

We were lucky to get Terry Pratchet and Neil Gaiman in to sign copies of Good Omens.

Neil very kindly and without my knowledge, spotted these mags spilling out from my open locker and proceeded to look through them signing covers where his name appeared.

You can imagine the surprise I had when I discovered this ;D

Didn't read that much... hard to find; was a subscriber to The Dark Side for many years, though - and to hear of them in the last couple of years to actively plagarise film reviews is a tad distressing.

Just put up a piece about the second issue at http://www.mathewfriley.com - lots of goodies in there.

I'm still reading The Darkside and have tried to ignore the plagiarism controversy - I'm hoping they have moved on...

I have very fond memories of Fear magazine as well—I came across it at issue #1, and I think had a complete run (down to when Newsfield went bankrupt and the receivers sent me a check for £2.75 compensation), long before I discovered the small press, the New SF Alliance, the BBR Catalogue, and others who nurtured me in the years before online zines came into existence. :) I probably still have a complete or near-complete run in storage somewhere. (I should find out what's missing, and see if I can persuade anyone to part with a copy to fill the gap, some time.)

I also met a few penpals through the classifieds, which again before social media was the first time I'd come across people with serious related interests. No wonder I have such fond memories...

I assume you all know by this point that John Gilbert has recently revived FEAR Magazine?

Oooh, that is intriguing news. (Looking at the new website, it seems issue #37 is already sold out. Was there ever a #35 and #36 back in 1991? I only have up to #34 in my collection.  :-\ )

Not sure subscribing at this point would be worth the nostalgia for the original run… especially as it's not currently a fiction zine, which was my favorite part. ::ponders::
