Hello
« on: August 06, 2009, 04:20:08 pm »
Couldn't think of anything witty to say so thought I would stick with the traditional, tried and tested and frankly under-rated hello. My name is Colin and I like Horror err I mean Fantasy. :D

Colin! Do you really mean horror? I'm a horror fan too (a bit like admitting to being an alcoholic, isn't it?  :D). Enjoy yourself here - there's horror as well as fantasy (and a bit of sf).

Yes horror i'm afraid, thanks for getting me to admit it, I think that's the first step towards a cure. Not that I don't like Fantasy or SF, they can be great particularly if they have some horror in them ;)

Hello, Highlander. I've got no problems with horror, but... um... I'm a lowlander.

Hello, Colin! Horror's more than welcome here, you just have to look at the awards shortlist. Are you the same Highlander known for his excellent blog?

Stephen - Excellent blog! No that can't be mine, my one's generally referred to in slightly less glowing terms. I didn't want to come on here and start advertising but if you must know my blog is www.highlandersbooks.com. Please don't tell Lev Grossman though I don't think he will want to read it anytime soon!

Caroline - Maybe not a cure but a form of therapy ;)

Jim - Sassenach!

I think Lev's going to have to take his lumps with that book... I'm enjoying it more than you did (though I haven't got to the Narnia bits yet), but the snipes at Potter in the text seemed rather ungentlemanly, given how closely it followed the Potter template...

As for the animal sex bits - if a woman's ability to say no is taken away, and then you have sex with her, isn't that effectively rape? I didn't see much difference between that scene and the teacher putting Rohypnol in the school dinners...

Thanks Allybird.

Stephen - Glad you are enjoying The Magicians. I just thought the whole thing was derivative and pointless. Surely if you want to write Potteresque fiction you at least come up with some of your own ideas. The Narnia bit is just bizarre, the characters get more and more unlikable and if you think the fox rape was bad wait till you see what the centaurs get up to.

Jim that's because we are farther North and everyone knows North is up so clearly we are looking down, see logic :D

BTW, interesting views on originality in fiction. Be nice if every idea was original, but they aren't -- it's the telling that counts. I have no intention of reading The Magician, and I've not finished a HP novel, so no agendacoming from me: kids in schools for/of magic? The Worst Witch perhaps? The Wizard of Earthsea? Even The Sword in the Stone. All done before.
