Reading area and Bookshelf showing off!
« on: September 30, 2009, 07:19:41 am »
For Sandra.   ;D  And Hi and welcome, it's lovely here really!   :-*

Continued from the other thread...

Stephen, Lord of Theaker said:
Quote
Keep going, Paul... My five year old's got more books than that.  ;D

We've got thirteen bookcases, including four six-footers with the books doubled up on every shelf.  8)

Well it's not a bookshelf unless they're double stacked.   ;)   But do you have boxes of books shoved under every bed and piles of books stacked on every spare surface as well?  And did you know you can make a good table if you throw a tablecloth over several boxes of books?  True story!   :-*

Sir Pete of Coleborn did quoth:
Quote
Paul -- there's space for another two shelves on that wall. You are slipping, my man   :)

So Paul of the Clan McCampbell said:
Quote
Oh, all right then! Is this better?   :D

(Alas the piccie will not carry over.)  But, dude, seriously, all that spare wall space and no shelves on them?!  Where are the messy stacks of the books that threaten to avalanche on the unwary visitor?    ;D

Hooray! Now we can have some fun chit chat without feeling like we just walked into a room with a row going on!

I can't really add a picture of my bookshelves as they are currently choc full of ecology and wildlife titles. I live in a small flat and sadly had to clear out all my fiction bit by bit over the years of my degree. The down side of distance learning and not wanting to miss out!

As a result I now have severe bookcase envy, but do have two shelves full of my recently read and to be read, so balance is being restored.

Meanwhile, my envy has grown as I saw this on a website, now I want stairs so I can do the same:

http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/at-europe/at-europe-london-closeup-the-amazing-staircase-042543

I also recently saw pictures of Neil Gaiman's huge library, complete with comfy armchairs and sleeping cat. Something to aim for...

Book envy it's a terrible thing. Someone should set up a helpline.

I'm Sandra Norval and I'm a bookaholic.

Gaiman's library = severe bookcase envy!

The only bookcases I've got space for are these:

Everything else is stashed in assorted boxes under beds... for which a map and full inventory is needed for navigation purposes... ;D  What?   ;) :-*

The staircase is fantastic - although surely you're a bit buggered if you end up with lots of oversize-format books? I've always wanted a spiral staircase lined with books: funny how the idea of stairs & books somehow works. Perhaps it's got something to do with encouraging you to slow down and look through your shelves instead of running on up & down.

I saw the Neil Gaiman's library thing a little while back and immediately looked at my comparatively sad little collection of books, thinking "Oh dear." What I particularly loved, though, was Gaiman's comment (either on his blog or Twitter) that this is just one of the libraries & doesn't include the study where he keeps what he referred to as "all the reference stuff". What on earth must that be like?

OMG! Jen I have those bookcases, complete with corner units and CD racks, IKEA, right? Not just books and stairs that go together then, if it wasn't for IKEA, many books would be homeless...  ;D

Lou, I didn't catch that comment from Neil Gaiman previously, makes me feel a little better. Now I can just say that I have a well developed reference library, with all my non-fiction titles and a developing fiction library. I do also have the comfy chair and cat, so it's a work in progress.  :P

"Bookshelf showing off"?

Really, Jen, that was the best thread title you could come up with?! I think you'll find that the correct technical term for it is "book porn"!  :D

So Paul of the Clan McCampbell said:
Quote

But, dude, seriously, all that spare wall space and no shelves on them?!  Where are the messy stacks of the books that threaten to avalanche on the unwary visitor?    ;D

True, but then there are certain books which I like to give 'breathing space' to in order to show them off, such as my Stephen Jones books

And my Virgn Books

Why the Virgin Books? Well, shortly after I hosted the Glasgow Open Night back in July (where, as well as providing a buffet, I sold copies of all nine horror titles from Virgin) series editor Adam Nevill sent me a care package by way of 'Thank you' for promoting Virgin's Dark Fiction line. Inside? One copy each of all nine books. Ohhh-kay, thinks I, why is Adam sending me books I've already got?

Then I opened them to their title pages. They were signed. They were personally inscribed to me. ALL OF THEM.

Now, five of those books (the two Williams, two Campbell and the Nevill) anyone attending Fantasycon could get signed, as all three of those authors regularly go along to that event. But the other four - the two Ligotti, the Stephen Gregory and the Robin Baker?

So that's why I give those nine books pride of place: I'm probably the only person who owns the full set, all signed and all inscribed!

Next? Well, just more book porn guv, ain't it?

And, of course, the ubiquitous cupboard full of stuff!

Is there still an 8256 inside that box?  :o

I had a pile of orphaned 8256 disks that I got converted a few years ago. Found all sorts of strange old stuff on them, including a complete list of all the books I'd read up until I was 21 - importing that got my Goodreads list off to a really good start.

I'll try and take some pictures of my shelves today...

This was a lot harder than I thought - most of the bookcases are in corridors, or behind desks and tables. But I gave it a go.

Here's the shared family bookcase from the living room - from top to bottom, Ranj's shelf, my shelf (note the encroachment!), LCT (aged five) shelf, TMT (aged two) shelf:

On the top there are fancy (mostly unread) Folio books. Top shelves here are mostly books I didn't finish:

From my office/study. On the top are more unread Folio Society books. Top shelf is my "second-hand bookshop". Second shelf is mainly sets. Third shelf on the right is reference:

Penguin and Oxford Classics from the corridor, plus Jules Verne, Dark Horse, etc:

Hi booky people,

I have a lovely pic which I wanted to use as a heart-wrenching answer to your bulging bookshelves.  But the add image button doesn't seem to work (on BFS board) as elsewhere.  I click on add image icon - and then what?  When I finally reach the picture, all I can do is look at it!  Since the image in question is not Sigourney Weaver naked, I get bored!!  I've studied the board 'Help', but it doesn't actually tell you the simple vital missing link, but only shows you that an image has been added - but how?
Do you think people like me ought to be put down in this day and age?   And possibly cloned in the future (for good behaviour while dead) for an updated Jurassic Park?

Welcome to the BFS forums, Steve!

Upload the picture somewhere else, then right click on it in your browser. There should be an option along the lines of "Copy image URL".

Then click on the Insert Image button here to get this (only with square brackets):

(img)(/img)

Put the link in between the image tags to get (with square brackets):

(img)http://www.britishfantasysociety.org/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;attach=111;type=avatar(/img)

Which should show the picture thus:

Er...  Can 'upload' mean to put a picture on your own computer as well as put it on the web?  I've done both (my blog now has its first entry for a couple of months!) but nowhere do I see the option for an image URL.  The only time I've ever seen this option, in fact. is when I want say to copy a web page, then I can both copy the page itself ("sigourney Weaver as never seen before")  (in what i think you call 'file') and also copy the URL from the http thingie at the top of the screen (which probably has a name...).   But even when I held a starving cat over th emouse as a warning, and then right-clicked, I was allowed to send the thing by email, to RAR it, to turn it round, to have it vetted by MI5 and the estate of Mary Whitehouse - but no way to get an URl.  And this applies whether I'm clicking on the picture in My Pictures (?) or on the same picture now sitting in my blog and wondering what the blazes it is doing there.

So what is the extremely elementary thing I have somehow misunderstood?  How many times am I allowed to misunderstand before I am banished to that board mentioned elsewhere here ("Why I hate the Intwrnet") where some 'Blunt Kent' character (if you studied Henry IV part One) needlessly (emphasis on 'needlessly', unless you prefer the words 'gratuitously and viciously)  slags off Alison Byrd?

It'll only work if it's on the internet. I don't know why it isn't working from your blog. If you point me the way of it I'll have a look...
