What have you been watching on telly?
« on: August 10, 2010, 05:53:09 AM »
Last week caught up on series one of V. We'd let episodes pile up without watching them, but watching it nightly for a week brought it to life - as well as bringing back happy memories of watching the original mini-series that way on ITV!

The production breaks seem to be working for it, giving them plenty of time to assess what's working and what isn't. The characters who weren't really working have been ruthlessly culled, in ways that have added some weight to the storylines.

It isn't a perfect series, and it reminds me way too much of Earth: Final Conflict, but there are definite signs of life.

I remember watching the trailer episode to V many moons ago and I thought it was very good.  But unfortunately never caught up with the series.

I saw The Deep last night.  Second episode but the first one I've seen.  And I was pleasantly surprised at it pushing all the right buttons for Sf drama on tele. 8)

We're continuing to watch V; watchable, just about, but not exactly good. Lots of silly talk about souls and god, and a daft plot. Its protagonists are the most hopeless terrorists this side of Four Lions, inviting people to their secret lair willy-nilly. The scene where they tortured a V for information had too little weight, no consciousness that torture is wrong, even if you do get the information you wanted.

I thought Game of Thrones was rather special.

I'm ashamed to say I've never read the source material, but I really enjoyed The Game of Thrones

Currently having a lot of fun with My Babysitter's a Vampire, although it's scaring the children silly. I remember when Disney were in the thrall of the moral minority, but now they're showing the next best thing to a new series of Buffy.

Just fast forwarded through 80% of Terra Nova, Jurrasic Park meets Lost, with big guns...tripe!

It's not great, is it? Like a sillier take on Outcasts. Refreshing to see a mixed race family as the leads in a US programme, though.

I preferred the dystopian earth at the beginning, thought that imagery was much more inventive than the dino's versus guns we have moved on to.

It is slightly better than the terrible adaptation of Delicate Sound of Thunder

I did not! Was it worth seeing?

We're still watching Terra Nova. We never sit down to watch it at the beginning of the night, but it's there on the TiVo and we'll often watch it for the ten minutes before bedtime.

Not been a fan of Sherlock Holmes generally but the films have been awesome and the TV series pretty good. I know it's not fantasy, or is it? Certainly the TV series is, bringing it into modern times with no reference to the famous sleuth from the 1890s-ish.

Do you mean because there is no fictional Sherlock Holmes in his world, no stories by Arthur Conan Doyle? I don't think that would be enough to make it a fantasy programme, unless we saw how that had changed the world - e.g. if the development of forensic science and detective work had been slowed without Sherlock as an inspiration...

More generally, the problem with adding supernatural and fantasy elements to a Sherlock Holmes story, I think, is that you blow every other deduction of his career out of the water. If he can't eliminate the impossible, how could he ever settle on a solution to any problem? I think that was why the hound in episode two left him so shaken.
