Vikings Season 2 is wonderful - great to see a medieval series with a touch of magical realism which has very strong female characters

it's far superior to Game of Thrones in my opinion  ;D

I've been watching Remember Me on the Beeb, an old fashioned ghost story with Michael Palin. Last episode tonight, I must say I've rather enjoyed it, nothing surprising but it's well made and keeps the feeling of dread going well. A splendid ghost story now the inter is closing in.

Wayne.

We've been catching up on Supernatural over the holiday. Something about horror that feels cosy at Christmas. I really admire the way that programme can comfortably contain so many different moods, from the laugh out loud funny (Dean can talk to dogs) to grim, serious, everyone is going to die and we're to blame (I'm guessing that'll come later in the series, it usually does), and I think that's part of the reason it has such legs.

I'm surprised it doesn't get more stick over its torture scenes, though. Sam and Dean make Jack Bauer look like a bleeding heart liberal, and the information they get is usually shown to be reliable. In this season they even talk about "zero dark thirtying" someone, which seems a bit iffy. Bauer turns to torture as a last resort when a nuclear bomb is about to explode in the White House or something, but for Sam and Dean it's accepted as part of their everyday routine.

Started watching Defiance season 1 (now on Amazon Instant), about an Earth transformed by aliens who then went to war with each other, the end result looking a bit like Mad Max with aliens. Seems interesting so far.

The children are bingeing on the Frozen episodes of Once Upon a Time, which just came to Netflix. They'd have watched it through the night if we'd let them.

Watched the first episode of Outlander. It's a cross between Goodnight Sweetheart and Doctor Who: The Highlanders (the main character is called Jamie Fraser!). Much saucier than I was expecting, and the incontinent voiceover was awful, but it looks very pretty and has a good mix of action and romance. I wouldn't mind watching more but Ranjna wants us to get back to House of Cards season three.

Four episodes into Daredevil and enjoying it. Perfectly cast, faithful to the comics, and it's got the best hand-to-hand fighting I've seen on television. And it ties in nicely to the Marvel universe films, with Hell's Kitchen being rebuilt after the events of the first Avengers film. Ben Urich is in it, so I'm wondering if he'll show up in the next Spider-Man film too.

I got bored with the British Masterchef, but I really enjoy the Australian & New Zealand versions. They're much more fun.

having bought a TV licence to rant at the live election results as they came in ... I've been watching the Beeb

Parliament and the Lord Mayor's question time made me realise how far removed politicians are from the real world, and their manners are appalling
and what's happened to the news? ... it's awful

but the other stuff that I have watched:
- the new series about the Ancient Greeks is really good (available on BBC4 iPlayer)
- and I quite like that Anne Robinson thing about how we use money
- that show about Pound Shops is hilarious but I find the voice-over condescending
- and I caught a Australian kids series called the Nowhere Boys about some teens who end up in an alternative reality of their home town ... it could have been dire except that the Aussies have a knack of injecting a bit of weird street cred while stereotyping their characters ... and kudos for their spin on the use of humoral theory in the personalities of the protagonists - kids' stuff but what the hells :D

the Beeb's The Ascent of Woman is a fascinating series

loved the insights into the rites of Demeter in ancient Athens - well worth watching  8)

The Great Pottery Throw Down which is like that annoying bake-off series but inedible ... but hey, I like pots and plates more than gluten so I'm as happy as a pig in muck  8)

oh and that BBC 4 series on Colour  ;D

Started watching Luke Cage on Netflix (or “The Net Flicks” as I accidentally called it channeling my grandparents) over Christmas. It has the somewhat predictable, clear-cut, uncomplicated-good-and-evil, cut-out characters that so many superhero shows do, but it is shiny and well made, the cast strong, and less saccharine than much Marvel nonsense. I'll give it a few more episodes to give it the chance to surprise me.
