World Fantasy Convention 2013
« on: April 19, 2012, 04:17:36 PM »
Won't be news to many of you, but the World Fantasy Convention 2013 will be held in Brighton, and is being run by many of the same people involved in FantasyCon 2011 and 2012. At one point it was going to be merged with FantasyCon 2013, but I don't know if that's still the case.

Lots of interesting discussion about it on Twitter today, specifically on the subject of dealers not being allowed to sell comics - e.g.  Cheryl Morgan, John Scalzi, Lavie Tidhar.

If I planned on selling stuff at WFC 2013 I'd have a box of comics under the counter on principle. :D

I've only read Cheryl Morgan's blog http://www.cheryl-morgan.com/?p=13576 so far, but I get the impression they just cut and pasted the bumph from the previous World Fantasy website. I'm hoping that this is something they will reconsider, otherwise it's going to put a major crimp in my plans to launch Dark Adapted Eyes there...

Not allowed to sell comics? That's a bit odd!

I really wish I could get to this - mainly because Richard Matheson is a long-time hero of mine from his days as a Twilight Zone writer. To meet him would be almost as good as meeting Rod Serling in the flesh - which obviously isn't going to happen (well, not until I go into the "twilight zone" too!).

Comics is just a side issue -- look at the price per table. Eeek!

Being used to table prices at comic conventions, that's not exceptional. What does sting is that it's on top of the cost of your membership, meaning you'd better have more than one of you able to crew your table or you'll have an expensive old time just sitting in the dealers room while the rest of the convention is going on, unable to participate!

Strange indeed! I have a very different view on comics, or graphic novels as I grew up on them and French graphic novels are what brought me to fantasy in the first place. Goes to show that cultural differences can be overwhelming at times  ;)

I bought my membership and since I saw that Alan Lee will be GoH, I know I'll be there for sure. But I am not sure I'll participate in the art show. This seems really too big for small fish like myself. We'll see.

Indeed! Alas, it's still a very slow trek towards getting comics the sort of mainstream acceptance here that they enjoy in the rest of Europe. And much as I love the superheroes, they're part of the problem.

Just looking at the wfc site... Anyone know how you're supposed to contact anyone?

Unlike any other con site, there's no 'contact us' section??

If you scroll a long way down the "welcome" page, Steve, there's an "info" address:  info@wfc2013.org

I've used that one myself to contact the organisers and got a reply very quickly.

You're right though, it could do with being more prominent.

Yep. I reckon they just want people to book - not ask questions.   ;)
