Hi folks

Apologies for starting a new topic with this but I can't seem to add replies to the ones in the events section.

At the recent FantasyCon I signed up for World Fantasy Con because I was told that doing so would ensure I avoided the next hike up in price.  I didn't pay anything at the time, just filled in a form each for me and my partner with details.  I haven't been contacted yet about payment.

I'd like to get this sorted so I can be sure of our attendance, but trying to pay via the site only gets me the new price version.  I've also emailed but no joy.

Did anyone else sign up at FantasyCon and have you heard anything since?

Thanks for any help

Ray Cluley

I registered on the Sunday at the Dead Dog Party – in person. Likewise, I am still awaiting official confirmation as I need a paper or printable receipt. However, I know that I am officially registered because if you go to the website www.wfc2013.org and click on “Attending Members” everybody who has so far enrolled is listed. So, try that, Ray.
Otherwise, keep enquiring.
Best of luck.

Posting this here as I can't seem to post on the actual World Fantasy Convention 2013 thread:

*****************

I note the following on the WFC2013 website:

***

Back in 1988 and 1997, the London-based World Fantasy Conventions incorporated the British Fantasy Society's FantasyCon and the presentation of the British Fantasy Awards. This made sense to me as there was a major overlap between the attendees of both conventions. Is that happening again at WFC 2013?

Having originally turned down our attempts to convince the British Fantasy Society to come on board as a partner in WFC 2013, with all the preferential opportunities that would entail, the new Committee has subsequently reversed that decision. As a result, the BFS will now have a "presence" at WFC and, as with the 1988 and 1997 events, we plan to co-present the British Fantasy Awards and the World Fantasy Awards at the Banquet on the Sunday afternoon.

***

In the interests of full disclosure and transparency here, members might like to know what actually happened as the above might give an incorrect impression to people reading it.

The BFS was approached about combining FantasyCon with WFC early on, and the BFS Committee agreed that the events could be combined. This was noted to Stephen Jones on 19 January 2011.

However, the BFS Committee was also having lots of discussion about how the BFS was progressing, and how we wanted to try and increase the respectability of the Awards, and the profile of FantasyCon over the coming years - As Chair I approached and discussed this with several people to get ideas and suggestions, and one thing that we really wanted to try and do, was to ensure that the British Fantasy Awards - which we felt were important in their own right - would not become an 'add on' presentation to the World Fantasy Awards. We felt that at previous WFCs, this was what had happened - that all the focus, understandably, was on the World Fantasy Awards, and the BFAs were somewhat side-lined.

I therefore wrote to Jones on 26 February as follows:

Just wanted to drop you a note about the 2013 con (!) though it seems very early to be planning things in any great detail ...

Nevertheless, we have been having much thought of late about FantasyCon and in particular the British Fantasy Awards and how they are handled and presented. We want to start from 2012 trying to increase their profile and prestige - something I know you've always been keen on - and so for the 2013 event, want to have a British Fantasy Awards Dinner on the Friday night of WHC to continue the building process.  We would also like to organise that ourselves, but obviously to have it under the aegis of the WHC and listed in the programme etc.  I wanted to let you know this at this stage so that you are aware of our early plans. It means one less thing for you to have to worry about, and it also builds nicely in the context of the WHC itself towards the World Fantasy Award presentations which I presume (correct me if I'm wrong) would be on the Saturday or perhaps the Sunday of the event.

Please let me know if, at this stage, you need any more information (not that I have much that I can give).  It is early, and we will be sorting out a venue, pricing and other details for the Awards Dinner as we get closer to 2013.

I then received this reply from Jones on 26 February 2011:

Unfortunately, I doubt very much that we will be able to facilitate a completely seperate British Fantasy Awards banquet.

The WFC Board are traditionally very much against sharing the convention with other organisations. In the past, Jo Fletcher and I have gone out on a limb to ensure that the BFS/FantasyCon was included as a part of any British WFC. To this end, we have been given special permission to combine the two awards ceremonies.

Not only do I not think that they will sanction a separate event (most conventions can only support one Awards Banquet anyway), but another awards dinner will also impact singnificantly on programming.

I will pass your comments on to my co-organisers of WFC 2013 and see what they say before it is presented to the Board, but I have to say that I think it unlikely.

We were quite disappointed by this, and the BFS Committee felt that we really needed to be in control of our own Awards Ceremony which had been the jist of the discussions to date.

I replied on 27 February:

Thanks for the info.  We might need to reconsider F/Con being a part of WFC for that year then.  As I say, we have plans for the Awards and don't want the building process interrupted in 2013.

Let me know what the outcome is and I'll rediscuss it all with the folks here.

We didn't receive an 'outcome' email from Jones, and so I then replied again on 13 March after discussing the situation with the rest of the BFS Committee:

Hi Steve

After a lot of discussion, the BFS Committee have decided that they would rather present the British Fantasy Awards at an event of our own rather than joining forces with World Fantasy on this occasion.

Hopefully this decision is early enough not to adversely impact you.

To which Jones replied on the 14th March:

Thank you for getting back to us.

I personally think you're making a mistake by separating the BFS from World Fantasy Con, but I wish you well with your plans.

We received no other emails from Jones or anyone else involved in WFC2013 trying to persuade us to change our minds or offering any compromises or other suggestions to try and keep the profile of the British Fantasy Awards high ...

The reasons were as explained in the emails: we really wanted the BFAs to be seen as significant and important in their own right, and with the World Fantasy Convention apparently unable or unwilling to grant the BFS a time to present their own awards as part of the convention (something which apparently was not an issue when they later agreed to hold a separate ceremony for the Gemmell Awards), the BFS Committee at the time felt that it was better for the BFS to present their own awards at their own ceremony.

Of course, as events panned out, the BFS committee was effectively disbanded after the 2011 FantasyCon, and any plans we had for the BFS, FantasyCon and the Awards were thrown out the window.  Such is life.

Cheers

David

Not really got the hang of this forum, so I may be posting this in quite the wrong place, but if anyone is interested in sharing a room in the Holiday Inn, let me know. (Friday / Saturday / Sunday).

World Fantasy Con Poetry (and other matters)
Megan Kerr is doing an amazing job of recording almost everything that occurred at the recent World Fantasy Convention 2013 in Brighton (UK) with an ongoing series of posts about panels, readings, interviews, etc. Her latest post concerns the Poetry Event that I hosted on Saturday 2 November. Within her blog, Megan has included my closing piece “H. P. Lovecraft’s Loathly Eldritch Band”, which has previously appeared in both “Dagon” and “Dark Horizons” magazines. Yes, it is a skit based on the song you think it’s based on!
Click on the link and you can also read poems by Megan herself, Roz Kaveny, Tina Rath and Ian Hunter. All of the pieces were performed on the night.
