Suggestions for the 2014 awards
« on: February 20, 2013, 08:41:40 AM »
You can now start suggesting 2013 items that will be eligible for the British Fantasy Awards 2014.

Submit your items here: http://tinyurl.com/suggestions2014

The list will appear here: http://tinyurl.com/list2014

It's an anonymous form, so don't be shy about adding your own stuff to the list.

Any authors, editors and publishers who might have multiple titles to supply are welcome to email them to me in a spreadsheet (stephen.theaker@gmail.com) - in-house metadata sheets are fine, but remember to add a column listing the category the items are intended for. That's especially important for novels (over 40,000 words), novellas (15,000 to 39,999) and short stories (under 15,000).

Sorry about that - thanks for letting me know. It isn't intended! You should just see a form that anyone can fill in without giving a password.

It didn't seem to happen to me in Firefox or Chrome, but did in Internet Explorer. I can't get it to happen again. Is it still happening for you?

I think it might be that your browser has noticed you're visiting a Google Docs page and is helpfully suggesting that you sign in.

If it's still happening let me know and I'll investigate further.

The eligibility list is currently very short on comics, artists, collections, non-fiction, newcomers, screenplays, small presses: http://tinyurl.com/list2014. Contributions gratefully received: http://tinyurl.com/suggestions2014.

Keep an eye out too for any of your own work on the list, and check for spelling errors, miscategorisations, misattributions, etc. Best to catch that stuff now if we can!

Voting in next year's awards is planned to begin on 1 January 2014, so now is the time to add your favourite works of 2013 to our eligibility list:

Submit your items here: http://tinyurl.com/suggestions2014

They will appear on the list here: http://tinyurl.com/list2014

The list is especially short on newcomers, magazines, films/tv, comics and artists, so get racking your brains. Last year I could tell how much voters were using the list - the text of many votes had been copied and pasted from it.

And check the list for your own work too. Let me know about any mistakes, typos, misattributions, etc you spot so that I can correct them.

No, because that isn't a voted award. And everyone who has ever had any connection to fantasy is in theory eligible. Suggestions are taken during the awards voting process, and then the BFS committee discuss everyone suggested by the membership, as well as any other names they have in mind.

Can we put in books of poetry, eg Star Kites by Mark Valentine? If so, I presume in the Collection category?

Yes.

In this case, yes, while a selection of poetry from multiple authors would go into anthology. Non-fiction poetry would also be eligible in the non-fiction category.

You know, like if someone wrote a book of poetry in tribute to me or something...

Stephen's patience is so great
He eats noodles from a plate.
His wife is still more patient yet
But neither of them want a pet.

Unfortunately, my poetry is not eligible for the awards, so don't be tempted to add that one to the eligibility list.

No, nothing I've written or published is eligible for any of the awards. Where I've contributed in a small way to a publication - e.g. reviews for Interzone and Black Static, or if I ever get a story in an anthology - those publications are still eligible, although I would of course have to advise the BFS committee and the jurors of my involvement, and provide the voting records in the relevant category to the chair for checking (as happened this year, when Black Static, Interzone and TTA Press were all nominated). But nothing that's all me. Quite right, too! I'll keep my fingers crossed for the Hugos!
