Colin Wilson (26 June 1931-5 December 2013)
« on: December 06, 2013, 07:31:05 pm »
Just to show what a terrible year this has been so far I just heard that Colin Wilson has died. He wrote some tremendous genre novels, including The Philosopher's Stone, The Mind Parasites, The Return of the Lloigor, as well as works on philosophy, the occult, literature, crime, etc, etc.

I first came across him in my teens when I borrowed The Outsider, then The Strength to Dream from the library. In The Strength to Dream he wrote a scathing article on H. P. Lovecraft, only for August Derleth to contact him and for him eventually, not only to re-evaluate his thoughts on Lovecraft, but to write some Lovecraftian fiction of his own!

Sad news. My brother-in-law was a huge fan of his true crime books. I enjoyed the Spider World books, without knowing anything of the other work he was famous for. I liked The Space Vampires, and the film based on it, Lifeforce, is one of my favourites.

His Spider World novels were great fun. His range of books was amazingly broad. One of my favourites, though it was possibly one of the grimmest, grittiest crime novels ever written was The Killer. No glamorizing of the serial killer in this!

He also wrote a fascinating biography of Rasputin, which I would love to reread some time.

He was also one of the earliest UK commentators to write about HPL, i.e. in 1961. And he wasn't very complimentary!

But he was big enough to change his opinion later, even to the extent of writing some Lovecraftian novels himself.
