There's a thirteen-hour Audible version of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez's Locke and Key on the way in October, with a cast including Kate Mulgrew and Tatiana Maslany, and for some reason it's free until 4 November 2015: http://www.audible.co.uk/pd/Sci-Fi-Fantasy/FREE-Locke-Key-Audiobook/B00YI1HCOE/

Pro Se Productions
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ALL FIRST STORIES IN PRO SE SINGLE SHOT SIGNATURE SERIES AVAILABLE FREE FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER!

In May 2014, Pro Se Productions, a leading Publisher of Genre Fiction and New Pulp, launched an ambitious endeavor to provide readers with digital short fiction by today’s best Authors on schedules ranging from bi weekly to every six months. The Pro Se Single Shot Signature line involved 40 plus writers telling tales that ran the genre gamut from one end to the other and intended to set a new standard in Pulp Fiction. Although several series have been produced, the line has had issues becoming established, as stated by the company. To that end, Pro Se Productions has established September as Pro Se Single Shot Signature Month, not only to essentially re establish the original intent of the line, but also to debut new series and make other announcements, insuring that the digital imprint will fulfill its original intent.

“Real life,” says Tommy Hancock, Pro Se’s Editor in Chief, “sometimes affects everything, even business. And there are choices to be made when that happens for a company like Pro Se. Either you push on as if nothing has happened and hope it all works out and no one notices. Or you fall back, regroup, and come out even stronger than before, taking the scars with the stars. That’s what we are doing with the Pro Se Single Shot Signature line. Our large scale plan for the fantastic work of this unbelievable collection of writers did not fully gel in the last year, due in large part to issues related to the lives of many involved, myself primarily. However, with the support of staff and the sheer tenacity of the writers involved in this project, we are now in the place to not only carry on with the great Signature series and writers’ imprints that have already launched, but September will see the debut of several new series that make this entire project something that is unparalleled in New Pulp today. And what better way to kick that off than with offering readers the chance to get on board existing series for free?”

For the month of September, Pro Se Productions is offering the first story/episode/chapter of each of its existing Pro Se Single Shots Signature series for free! Enjoy mystery, super heroics, horror, fantasy, and more for free in most formats via Smashwords and enter worlds created by the best writers of Fiction today! A Humble Bundle of Neil Gaiman rarities: https://www.humblebundle.com/books

Wonder if any of his BFS book reviews are in there somewhere? It includes his book about Duran Duran.

Oh yeah, that looks great! Sadly I don't have a Kindle account. Has anyone downloaded it and seen whether it's DRM'ed or not?

a lovely little competition being held by Omnium Gatherum books where the top prize is a Kindle Fire

it relates to dark fantasy writer Brent Michael Kelley's Chuggie series which is, quite frankly, weird, hilarious and imaginative - I've read all of his books and recommend them all

anyway here's Kate Jonez's (editor) blurb on it:

October + Chuggie = Chugtober!

During the 31 days of Chugtober Omnium Gatherum and Brent Michael Kelley are sponsoring six contests. Each contest has an exciting prize. We’re giving away witch fingers, tchotchkes, ebooks and other stuff. There are lots of ways to earn entries. At the end of Chugtober the person who has accrued the most entries to all the contests will win the grand prize a 7 inch wifi Kindle Fire loaded with all the Mischief Mayhem Want and Woe books and a few extra surprises.

Contest One Chuggie on a Stick begins Sunday Chugtober 4th. Enter early and often. Winner receives a bag of witch fingers and book one of Mischief Mayhem Want and Woe. To learn about witch fingers visit: http://www.catbat.com/bmk/witch-fingers/

If wishes were horses then we'd all be eating steak.
Jayne Cobb, Firefly.

But ... if fishes were courses then we'd all be eating hake ...

There's a big sale of Vertigo comics on Comixology this week, all at £2.99 a book, meaning you can buy the complete run of Preacher for £18, the complete run of Ex Machina for £15, and lots of Hellblazer, Y: the Last Man and Transmetropolitan. (Expect to see a big chunk of my old comics collection on eBay in the near future.)

Bev Allen's Novella, "A Solemn Curfew", is free on Amazon from today, until Sunday. I reviewed it as part of my review of The Secrets of Castle Drakon anthology, from Thorstruck Press. Here's what I had to say...

‘A Solemn Curfew is both amusing and dark. Quine is the cook in charge of vegetables in the vast kitchens of Castle Drakon. Underappreciated by the head chef, he finds himself in a constant struggle to get his skills noticed, and thus properly rewarded by the lord of the castle. Never before have I been forced to break in the middle of a story because it made me so hungry! Quine knows that mushrooms are very popular with his Lordship, so when Hurl, the merchant, shows him some very strange, and interesting mushrooms, well, perhaps his life will take a turn for the better… I really liked this one a lot. So much so that it’s the first item that I’ve added to the BFS suggestions list of novellas published in 2014 to be considered for nomination for the British Fantasy Awards this year.

Sadly, Thorstruck Press ceased trading very soon after my review was published, so any chance of Bev being considered for the award was scuppered by the fact that the story was no longer available. Since then, Bev has republished it herself on Kindle & I recommend you all go download it immediately. Here's the links...
