BFS bulletin
« on: October 04, 2014, 08:58:01 AM »
In a few minutes we'll be sending out a new BFS email bulletin. It's a bit of a test run, which may develop into a monthly thing or peter out quietly, depending on interest. While the email newsletter produced by Martin Roberts is open to everyone who signs up, this bulletin is exclusively for BFS members.

It's intended to be quite plain and simple, boring even, to make it straightforward to produce, in order to get society information out to you regularly and reliably.

The plan is for me to email the society's committee and staff towards the end of each month to ask for any updates, and in the bulletin I'll pass those updates up to you. If the bulletin takes off we could also use it for distributing any ebook publications and inviting you to vote in the awards, but let's see how it goes first.

Anyway, hope you like it. I'll keep you posted on any developments.

The comments I've had by email about the bulletin have all been very nice, so thank you for that. It seems to have gone well so I'll do another one next month.

If you didn't receive the bulletin, it may be that we don't have your most up-to-date email address - let our secretary know if our records need updating.

The thrilling December 2014 bulletin went out to BFS members this afternoon, with various bits of news from BFS staff and society members, plus download links for ebooks of back issues where available. If you didn't receive it and you think you should have done, let me know and I can check we have an up-to-date email address for you.

The February email bulletin should be with BFS members in the next day or two - we're just waiting for one important item to be settled. We haven't had much member news in for this one; remember that BFS members can submit news about their writing and publishing activities to us for the bulletin via this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1awgJ2Xx0Z0iqzL42_F-ooByu67n5uitwA-BlMWBnz0c/viewform

The April bulletin will be with you any minute now. No April Fool's jokes in it, I promise. Remember that BFS members can submit their own news for the bulletin via this form.

If you are a BFS member and you have some news you'd like to be included in the July bulletin, now's a good time to submit it. The form is here.

Members often try to email in their bits and bobs, but I insist on everyone using the form because I can insert html between the answer columns in the spreadsheet, and so typeset the whole section for the bulletin in a minute or two.

This month's bulletin is scheduled to go out to BFS members this evening. Bit shorter than normal because I'm very pressed for time this week, but all your favourite features should be back next time.

Did it go out? I never received one, and I'm pretty sure I should do.

It did, but I'm afraid your membership is down as having expired on March 31.

If that seems wrong, please let James know via secretary@britishfantasysociety.org.

It would have been nice if someone had told me my membership was about to expire.

Your expiry date should have appeared in the January 2015 and February 2015 bulletins, plus others last year, and there was a separate email confirming everyone's expiry dates on 1 December 2014.

But I've also set up something new this month in Mailchimp, to send renewal notices semi-automatically to anyone whose membership has expired recently, and from next month, to send welcome emails to anyone who has recently joined. It's a spin-off from the work I do on the bulletin, and with luck won't entail more than a few minutes' extra work for me, while saving quite a lot of work for the membership secretary, leaving them to focus on maintaining the membership database and dealing with any problems.

The last one I have was sent on 22 July, -- is that the latest one?

Out of interest, are we talking about the one edited by Stephen or the one by Martin?
