Christmas Open Night 2014
« on: October 16, 2014, 04:32:10 PM »
I was hoping to come down from Scotland for the open night - is it the 5th of December? And any idea where? That would help on the hotel front, thanks.

Don't think it's confirmed yet - Richard has been visiting venues.

Thanks, Stephen, so it might not be the 5th either?

That's still the date Richard is aiming for, but if he finds the perfect venue and it's not available on that date I suppose it might change. I think they're all getting quite expensive to hire in the run-up to Christmas.

I can't remember a time when we actually had to pay for a venue for an open night ... we always tried to go for somewhere where we would get the room free on the promise of packing it to the rafters with people :)  I guess times change ...

I've always had to pay for venues in London, unless booking a room on a quiet night like a non-football event Tuesday. Guildford was another matter, though, so it probably depends on where you are.

We used to get the upstairs room in the Royal Connaught for free (in High Holborn, London). But then we used to get the hotel function rooms for FantasyCon for free, based on number of attendees and bar sales. As David said, times change.

Anything happening with the Christmas Night Out yet? I can make the 5th, but would still have to get a flight and a hotel, but doubt I could make the 12th.

Sorry for the lack of update on this - Richard has been out visiting/contacting loads of potential venues for December 5th but, up to now, all have required either a minimum spend or booking fee ranging from 500 up to almost 2000.

We're making a concerted effort over the next few days to find something but there's a chance we may have to shift the date - not ideal but I know many venues go back to "not-as-money-grabbing" mode in January.

Either myself or Richard will update again within the next 24 hours. Apologies to all but especially to IanH and any others who may be considering making a big journey for this.

Thanks, Phil, I can appreciate there is a lot on at this time of year. Quite happy to come down for a "Christmas Night" in January!

Hoping to have an update very soon...  ;)

A prospective venue has been found and we're hoping to confirm the date with them ASAP. As soon as we have it set in stone, we'll let you all know.

Thanks for organising last night's Open Night. Pity the room was split into two parties. Next time, if you use that venue, insist on using all of the space. Or remember to talk to that nice chappie Steve introduced to you :-)
