Chasing Shadows - Dave Hoskin
« on: July 26, 2015, 09:53:18 PM »
We were intending to keep this quiet until the last moment, but then Dave went and did a podcast about it, rather letting the cat out of the bag

Obverse Books is delighted to announce that we will be publishing 'Chasing Shadows' by Australian author Dave Hoskin early next year, covering the so-called Doctor Who Omnirumour, the return of 'Web of Fear' and 'Enemy of the World', and various associated bits and pieces surrounding the impact of such finds on a large, but insular sf fan community.

We don't have a finalised front cover yet, but here's the working version:

and the back cover blurb to whet your appetite...

At 2:45 in the morning, on June the 2nd, 2006, pirates stormed an oil rig off the coast of Nigeria. Eight workers were taken hostage. Four days later, all of them walked free... but one returned a changed man.

Seven years later that man re-emerged onto the world stage.

And he'd brought treasure with him.

Much of our television history is lost forever. A victim of fashion and economics, British television allowed some of the finest programs in the world to be destroyed. Images of people walking on the moon and fledgling stars being born. Laughs and thrills and a new kind of pop music wafting in from the streets. Gradually, systematically, the videotapes that contained this precious heritage were erased. But in 1967 the BBC began wiping a program that would ultimately attract an especial brand of fascination.

A science fiction series called Doctor Who.

This is the story of a man named Philip Morris and his hunt for missing treasure. A story about his return to Africa to face his demons and the years he spent searching for lost television. It's a story of the world as it used to be and what it's become. A story of successes and failures, of politics, rivalry and money. It's about the priceless things that Philip Morris found on his search and the impact his discoveries had upon a subculture.

This is a story about chasing shadows... and what happens when you catch them.
