Unfortunately, Louie Reynolds has decided to resign from the best anthology jury. I'm very disappointed, and I asked him to stay on, but I understand the reasons for his decision, and I'm very grateful to him for all the work he had done on the jury to date. I will not be replacing him on the jury at this late stage.

I haven't received any awards proposals for this year's AGM, and for once I'm not planning any myself. Proposals to change the awards constitution must be supplied to the awards administrator in writing, and if you do have a proposal planned, this would be a really good time to send it to me, so that I can include it in the awards news bit of the next member bulletin, and let everyone know about it.

If it's not quite ready yet, sooner you can get it to me the better, so I can let you know about any unforeseen consequences it might have, give you a chance, if you want, to polish it, and, when you're happy with it, publicise the proposal here, and on the main website, and supply it to our secretary for inclusion in the AGM agenda.

As far as this year goes, deliberations are going smoothly so far, which is nice for my last year, with several categories already decided, including the Karl Edward Wagner award. Production of the bookends has begun, and I'm going to order the first batch of plaques today.

The awards ceremony (organised once again by Lee Harris) is scheduled for 3.30pm on September 25 at FantasyCon by the Sea, and is preceded at 12.30pm by the banquet.

thanks Stephen, I have always been a bit confused by the BFAs as to whether they are primarily literary awards or ones that honour equally the whole spectrum of the publishing field ... if they are the latter I have a couple of proposals
If wishes were horses then we'd all be eating steak.
Jayne Cobb, Firefly.

But ... if fishes were courses then we'd all be eating hake ...

Hi Joshua. I'd answer that this way: they are awards that honour the categories introduced into the awards constitution at the AGM, and then the types of things voted for by members, which has often stretched those categories a bit further than might originally have been expected. (See for example blogs and podcasts getting votes in non-fiction, or, going back a bit, publishers getting votes in small press.)

The constitution of the society itself, at least at the time of writing, says that we are a social club for people "with a common interest in all types of Fantasy literature (Science Fiction, Heroic, Horror, Supernatural and related fields) and associated media".

So if there's some associated media you think they should be honouring, and you are a current BFS member, if you send me your proposals in writing, I'll ask the secretary to add them to the agenda of this year's AGM. I would say, though, given my experience with a proposal last year, that this may not be the best time to propose a change unless you'll be at the AGM to argue in its favour. What should then happen is that you having proposed the change, and taken questions, the chair of the meeting would ask if anyone seconds it, and if they do it would proceed to a vote.

I always recommend including in the written proposal the exact wording that you would like to be added to the constitution, so that the awards administrator, who may not be there on the day, can add it to the awards constitution without having to choose between various conflicting accounts of what was decided, especially given how rare it is for BFS AGM minutes to be released in time to be useful for that kind of thing, and that we'll have a new awards administrator taking over this time.

And of course feel free to talk about your proposals here, elsewhere, anywhere, blog about them, tweet about them, anything you like to drum up support among members. You may want to start a separate thread here where you can lead a discussion about your proposals. I hope that helps a bit.

A quick update to say that all of this year's awards have now been decided. I've thanked all the jurors for volunteering their time, and putting so much thought into the process, which went remarkably smoothly.

Having separate juries for each category means more work at the beginning, but it really pays off at the end!

Fellow fans of awards may want to check out Interzone #266, due out soon, for which I have written a guest editorial about running the British Fantasy Awards for the last four years, and what I love about awards in general. I quote Chuck Tingle.

I couldn't be at the AGM this morning, but here's the report I have supplied:

The awards went very well again this year, on the whole. 2,271 votes were cast across all categories, compared to 952 back in 2011. The announcement of the nominees trended on Twitter for most of that morning and was covered by the Guardian. As in previous years, having a separate jury for each category meant more work at the beginning, but paid off at the end, with many juries delivering decisions well before the deadline. Thank you to everyone who took part, whether as a voter, a juror, or a publisher supplying works for consideration. Thanks as well to Sarah Goss for creating the physical awards for the third year running, and to Lee Harris for again organising the ceremony itself. Sorry I canít be there. No proposed changes to the awards constitution have been supplied to me in writing this year. A handover document has been available in various drafts since June for potential replacements to consider, explaining how I went about things, but also identifying all the areas where another admin might exercise their discretion differently. Good luck to whoever it is!

(Here's a link to the handover document.)

What a brilliant set of results!

;D   8)    :-*   :D

Congratulations to all the lovely authors, artists and editors who won, and indeed to everyone on what was a very strong shortlist of nominees this year. Watching how smoothly the BFAs run and how effective and obviously deserving the results are, helps to restore some hope in the genre after the shenanigans we see at some of the other awards. Kudos to all involved (and especially to Stephen for his firm hand on the reins the last few years); you make it look easy.
