BFS Horizons #2
« on: August 26, 2015, 09:18:45 AM »
Issue one of BFS Horizons will be Sarah Newton's last publication (for now - they always come back!) as editor, after working on issues 9 to 13 of the BFS Journal, before moving over to BFS Horizons with the fiction. That means the chair is looking for a new editor to take over from #2, so if you'd be interested take a look at the job description on the vacancies page and get in touch with Phil. There's quite a lot of work involved, but you can take six months between issues, and appoint additional people to help out as you feel necessary. There is a lot of publishing experience on the committee, and given enough notice we can help with things like typesetting and proofreading if necessary.

Keeping you up to date: I've typeset the first four stories for issue two of BFS Horizons, which were selected by Sarah Newton. The issue will also include poetry selected by Ian Hunter, the winners of the 2015 BFS short story competition, and perhaps a couple of other pieces, depending on length. I'm aiming to have this issue finished by the end of October and with you in late November. Although a new editor hasn't yet been appointed, please do continue to send in your stories, so that the new editor has plenty to choose from for issue three.

The second issue of BFS Horizons, our new paperback fiction magazine, will go to press this week, and should be with members by the end of the year.

Issue two features stories by Jonathan Oliver, Douglas J. Ogurek, Anton Rose, Ada Nevis, Charles Wilkinson, Julian Gyll-Murray, Rob Nisbet and Elliott Simpson, and poetry by Elaine Gallagher, Allen Ashley and David Roe, as well as BFS news and a blast from the past: the minutes of our 2014 Annual General Meeting, prepared by James Dunn. The cover is by Howard Watts.

The poetry editor is Ian Hunter. Four stories were selected and edited by Sarah Newton, the other three stories being the winners of this yearís BFS short story competition. This yearís judge, Allen Ashley, provides an introduction to the latter.

This is a members-only publication, but we will order a few extra copies for new members, and our members-only email bulletin contains download links for back issues where available, so itís not too late to get a copy: you can join the society here.

If you would like to contribute to future issues of this publication, submission guidelines are here. However, the position of editor is still vacant. If you would be interested in taking over, please contact the BFS chair.

A very quick turnaround by the printers means I've been able to start sending this issue out to members today. Should be on its way to everyone by the end of the week.

BFS Horizons #2 is now in the post to everyone who was a member on November 30. Hope you enjoy it. There are a few extra copies in hand for members who join this month.

No editor's in place yet for #3 (contact the chair if you'd be interested), but once someone is appointed they'll be able to access the emails and submissions that have been coming in. An email auto-responder has been set up to let people emailing the editor's email address know what's happening.

The next BFS publication to come out will probably be BFS Journal #15, currently being worked on by new journal editor Allen Stroud.

I've just put another ten copies of this issue in the post to new members. Hope you enjoy it! There are only a few copies left now, so join quickly if you want one.

I've also today created the mobi and epub versions of this issue and the previous one, and they'll be available to download in the January 2016 members-only bulletin.

This issue is now out of stock: the last few copies of this issue went out today to new members. The ebook and pdf editions continue to be available in the Back Issues section of the monthly bulletin.

And that brings my involvement with this publication to an end. As far as I know a new editor isn't yet in place, so if you have any queries about forthcoming issues, or would fancy taking over, please contact the chair at the usual address. Thanks!
