Genuinely great discussion. Awards do seem to bring everyone out of the woodwork!

Some random bits -

The cost of our current bookends is about 80 each

If we *did* ever want sponsors, that's very little to ask. Again, I would think the appeal for sponsors would be with one of the two extremes - either a prestigious obvious category (novel, short story) or something unique (design, professional service). But 80 is currently the cost of (iirc) a full-page ad in the FantasyCon programme. I'm sure the actual sponsorship cost would probably be higher, but still... it could be pretty appealing.

is the BFS primarily a literary society that accommodates other interests or something else?

I'm also interested in people's takes on this - although mostly in the time-honoured 'are we for readers? writers? *all*professionals?' question, which I'm fairly sure we debate on a regular basis. The fact that we have a non-fiction publication - and have a few specialist awards like the Wagner & the Independent Press - and the open nights ('networking events') makes me think that we can (or could) represent a broader range of professionals. And there's no one else doing it.

There's the SFWA, I guess? The Society of Authors? The Publishers Association? But none of them seem to really talk to British, genre professionals (especially those involved with small or midsized presses). On the other hand, the BFS seems to be disproportionately staffed with individuals involved - in some capacity or another - with small or midsized presses.

Or, we're just a group of people that really like reading and talking about fantasy and horror? Which is also cool (if a little less unique).

I'm starting some TQF reader awards next year, partly because it'll be fun for me, and partly to scratch whatever itch got me doing this in the first place, so that I'm not tempted to volunteer to run the BSFA awards or the Gemmells or whatever might come up. One of the things I'm most excited about is the opportunity to test different categories and voting systems, e.g. for the first year, the categories will simply be whatever categories have appeared in the TQF review section (i.e. audio, books, comics, films, games, television), and the nominees will be everything that's been reviewed in those sections. It's been lovely to just think, this is how I want to do it, and then just get on with it, rather than having to persuade a hungover AGM that it's a good idea! When you're running the BFAs, there's not a lot of scope for experimentation.

Well, I say there's not a lot of scope for experimentation, but you could just propose an entirely different slate of awards categories in one go if you wanted - you just have to persuade the AGM to experiment with you!

Some of the changes Graham Joyce and co made in their mega-proposal had previously been rejected individually, but when it was presented as a big reforming package they all went through. I could see that happening again.

Not going to lie, that was a lot of the reasoning behind The Kitschies as well. Sometimes it is a lot easier (and more fun!) to start from scratch!

Are you tempted by running the BFAs? I think you'd be exceptionally good at it.
