Many thanks. I'm surpised by the author though as I've never managed to get into his longer stuff - ths sheer physical weight puts me off to start with!

Debbie, try Fevre Dream by GRRM -- one of the best vapire novels you'll read. No cute, fluffy vampy nonsense we get so much of nowadays

I can't think of many short stories off the top of my head except:

Jeffty is Five -- Ellison
The Mist -- King (can I include novellas?)
Scounting for Boys -- Brenchley
Sandkings, Nighflyers, and almost anything else by early George RR Martin (not so keen on his Tuf tales)

And now my mind's gone blank. I can't remember specific titles.

Talking of novellas: because I recently read so much stuff from 2007, I am happy to state that the novella is alive, well, and doing brilliantly.
