BFS Short Story Competition 2021

Once again this year I have been delighted to act as Lead Judge for the BFS Short Story Competition. We had sixty-eight entries; many of them of a high standard. The judging panel have read each story carefully, some of them twice or even three times. We are delighted to be able to announce the winners.

In first place: All That Water by Eris Young

In second place: Archive of Trapped Souls by Mikaela Silk

In third place: Changeling by James Bennett

An honourable mention goes to Idomeneja by Eris Young, which tied for first place before being withdrawn by the author.

Thank you to all of the entrants for sending us your stories, I’m sure that many of them will find a home elsewhere.

I would also like to extend my thanks to my fellow judges, Cat Hellisen and Dev Agarwal for their time, their insight and their dedication to the competition this year. It was a pleasure to work with you both.

Members can expect to read the winning stories in Issue 14 of Horizons, which will be published early next year. That wraps up the competition for this year. In 2022, the Lead Judge will be Steven Poore who I’m delighted to hand over to.

Please join me in wishing our winners a huge congratulations. And if you’re not a member yet, there’s still time to sign up and receive the next issue of Horizons to read these wonderful stories.
