Brighton Rocks

Out next month is a new movie adaptation of Graham Greene’s Brighton Shock – I mean Brighton Rock directed by Rowan Joffe and starring Sam Riley, Andrea Riseborough, Helen Mirren, John Hurt, Andy Serkis and Sean Harris. It has a difficult task, following the 1947 film (directed by John Boulton) which starred Richard Attenborough as Pinkie.  Apparently the new film is set in 1964 rather than the pre-war months of 1939. Lots of mods and rockers, I imagine.

“An adaptation of Graham Greene’s classic novel about a small-town hood who marries a waitress who witnessed him murdering a rival thug in order to keep her quiet. As his gang begins to doubt his abilities, the man becomes more desperate and violent.”

Meanwhile, a new edition of Brighton Rock is also due from Random House. This version includes a foreword  by Joffe and an introduction by JM Coetzee
